Aloe vera is a succulent plant species widely cultivated for its medicinal and cosmetic properties. Native to the Arabian Peninsula, it has been naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
Overview
Aloe vera is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant that grows 60–100 cm tall, spreading by offsets. The species has been utilized for thousands of years for its therapeutic properties, particularly the gel contained within its thick, fleshy leaves. The plant belongs to the family Asphodelaceae and is one of approximately 500 species in the genus Aloe. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and green to gray-green, with serrated margins bearing small white teeth. When the leaves are broken, they release a clear gel that has been used traditionally to treat burns, wounds, and various skin conditions. The plant produces tubular yellow or orange flowers on a spike up to 90 cm tall during the blooming season. Aloe vera thrives in arid and semi-arid climates and is highly drought-tolerant once established. It has been widely introduced as an ornamental and medicinal plant throughout tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions. The plant is commercially cultivated on a large scale for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. While valued for its medicinal properties, aloe vera can become invasive in some regions where it has been introduced, competing with native vegetation. The species is not currently evaluated by the IUCN for conservation status, as it is widely cultivated and not considered threatened in the wild.
How to identify
Aloe vera forms rosettes of thick, fleshy, lance-shaped leaves that are gray-green to bright green, typically 30–50 cm long and 5–10 cm wide at the base. The leaves have serrated margins with small white teeth spaced 1–2 cm apart. The leaves are filled with a clear, mucilaginous gel. The plant produces a tall inflorescence (up to 90 cm) bearing tubular yellow to orange flowers arranged in a raceme. The flowers are approximately 2.5–3 cm long and pendulous.
Habitat
Aloe vera grows naturally in arid and semi-arid habitats with well-drained sandy or rocky soils. It prefers hot, dry climates with minimal rainfall and full sun exposure, though it can tolerate partial shade. The plant is commonly found in desert regions, rocky slopes, and disturbed areas. In cultivation, it thrives in well-drained soil and containers.
Distribution
Native to the Arabian Peninsula, including Yemen, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Widely naturalized and cultivated throughout North Africa, the Mediterranean region, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira, tropical and subtropical Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and southern regions of the United States (particularly Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California).
Diet
Requires well-drained sandy or loamy soil with low to moderate fertility. Prefers full sun exposure but tolerates partial shade. Highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering once established; overwatering can cause root rot. The plant is adapted to nutrient-poor soils and does not require heavy fertilization. Optimal growth occurs in slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–8.0).
Behavior
Aloe vera exhibits typical succulent growth patterns, storing water in its fleshy leaves to survive drought conditions. The plant produces offsets (pups) from its base, forming clonal colonies over time. During stress (drought or cold), leaves may take on a reddish or purplish tinge. The plant enters a period of active growth during warmer months and becomes relatively dormant in cooler periods. It closes its stomata during the day to minimize water loss, using CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) photosynthesis.
Reproduction & life cycle
Aloe vera reproduces both sexually through seeds and asexually through vegetative offsets. Flowering typically occurs in late winter to early spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The tubular flowers are pollinated by birds (particularly sunbirds) and insects. Seeds develop in dry capsules that split to release them. Vegetative reproduction through basal offsets is the primary method of propagation in cultivation and naturalized populations, with offsets developing their own root systems while still attached to the parent plant.
When to look
Flowers appear in late winter to early spring (February to April in Northern Hemisphere). Can be observed year-round in frost-free climates. Best harvested for gel when plants are 3–4 years old during active growing season.
Cultural significance
Aloe vera has been used medicinally for at least 6,000 years, with references in ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Chinese, and Indian texts. Ancient Egyptians called it the 'plant of immortality' and it was reportedly used by Cleopatra in skincare. The gel is widely used to treat burns, wounds, skin irritations, and digestive issues. Modern commercial applications include cosmetics, lotions, beverages, and dietary supplements. The plant appears in traditional medicine systems including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It remains one of the most commercially important medicinal plants globally.
