The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a remarkable aquatic salamander that exhibits neoteny, meaning it retains its larval characteristics throughout its entire life. Unlike most amphibians that undergo metamorphosis, axolotls remain fully aquatic and keep their feathery external gills, wide head, and lidless eyes into adulthood. This species is endemic to the ancient lake complex underlying what is now Mexico City, primarily Lake Xochimilco and the neighboring Lake Chalco, though the latter is now extinct. Axolotls possess extraordinary regenerative capabilities, able to regrow entire limbs, portions of their heart, brain, and spinal cord without scarring. This remarkable trait has made them invaluable in biomedical research, particularly in studies of tissue regeneration and development. Wild axolotls are typically dark brown or black with a mottled appearance, though captive breeding has produced numerous color morphs including leucistic (pink with black eyes), albino, golden, and melanoid varieties. How to identify

Axolotls are medium-sized salamanders measuring 15-45 cm in length, characterized by a broad head, small lidless eyes, and three pairs of feathery external gills protruding from the back of the head. They have a wide mouth that appears to form a permanent smile, four legs with delicate digits (four toes on front feet, five on back), and a long laterally-flattened tail used for swimming. Wild-type individuals are dark brown to black with olive mottling, while captive morphs include leucistic (pale pink body with dark eyes), albino (pale pink with red eyes), golden (yellowish with reflective patches), and melanoid (solid black). A distinctive dorsal fin extends from behind the head to the tail tip. Unlike other salamanders, they lack eyelids and have a distinctive ramus extending behind each eye.

Habitat

Axolotls inhabit high-altitude freshwater lakes and canals with cold, oxygen-rich water, dense aquatic vegetation, and soft muddy or sandy substrates. They prefer water temperatures between 14-20°C (57-68°F) and are found at elevations around 2,200-2,400 meters above sea level. The species requires permanent water bodies with minimal current, abundant vegetation for hiding and hunting, and relatively stable water chemistry. Historically they occupied the interconnected lake system of the Valley of Mexico, including Lakes Xochimilco and Chalco.

Distribution

Endemic to the lake complex underlying Mexico City, Mexico. Historically found in Lakes Xochimilco, Chalco, and potentially other connected water bodies in the Valley of Mexico. Currently restricted to a few canals in Xochimilco and possibly small populations in Chalco. The entire native range is now confined to less than 10 square kilometers of canals and wetlands within urban Mexico City. Wild populations are critically fragmented and declining.

Diet

Axolotls are carnivorous predators that feed primarily on small aquatic invertebrates, insects, worms, crustaceans, small fish, and mollusks. They are opportunistic sit-and-wait predators that use suction feeding to capture prey, rapidly opening their mouths to create negative pressure that draws food items in. In their native habitat they consume mosquito larvae, water insects, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and occasionally smaller salamanders. Captive specimens are typically fed bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, earthworms, and specially formulated pellets. Juveniles feed more frequently on small invertebrates while adults can consume larger prey items.

Behavior

Axolotls are primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden among aquatic vegetation or under rocks and emerging at dusk to hunt. They are solitary animals that use a combination of vision, smell, and lateral line system to detect prey and navigate. Axolotls exhibit slow, deliberate movements punctuated by rapid strikes when capturing prey. They are capable of both swimming using undulating body movements and walking along the substrate using their legs. When threatened, they may autotomize (drop) their gills or tail, which regenerate completely. They are territorial to some degree and may display aggressive behavior toward conspecifics, particularly during feeding. Axolotls can occasionally gulp air from the surface to supplement gill respiration, though they rely primarily on their external gills and skin for oxygen uptake.

Reproduction & life cycle

Axolotls reach sexual maturity at 12-18 months of age. Breeding typically occurs from March to June when water temperatures rise slightly and day length increases. Males deposit spermatophores (sperm packets) on the substrate and perform courtship displays involving tail movements and nudging to guide females over them for fertilization. Females lay 100-300 eggs (sometimes up to 1,000) individually or in small clusters on aquatic plants or substrates. Eggs are encased in a protective jelly coating and hatch after approximately 14-21 days depending on temperature. Larvae are free-swimming upon hatching at about 10-11 mm length, initially feeding on their yolk sac before transitioning to small live prey. Unlike other Ambystoma species, axolotls do not naturally undergo metamorphosis to a terrestrial form, remaining aquatic throughout life due to neoteny. This permanent larval state can be artificially reversed through thyroid hormone treatment, though this is stressful and shortens lifespan.

When to look

Wild axolotls can be observed year-round in their aquatic habitat, though breeding activity peaks from March to June during the warmer spring months when water temperatures rise and day length increases. They are most active at night throughout the year.

Cultural significance

The axolotl holds profound significance in Mexican culture, featured in Aztec mythology as the god Xolotl who transformed into an axolotl to escape sacrifice. The name 'axolotl' derives from Nahuatl meaning 'water monster' or 'water dog.' Aztecs consumed axolotls as food and used them in traditional medicine. The creature appears on Mexican currency and is considered a national symbol. In modern times, the axolotl has become an iconic species in conservation biology and a cultural ambassador for Mexican biodiversity. The species is celebrated in art, literature, and popular culture, notably in Julio Cortázar's short story 'Axolotl.' Conservation efforts in Xochimilco involve local communities maintaining traditional chinampa farming systems that support axolotl habitat.
