Distribution

Native to eastern North America from Nova Scotia south to northern Florida and west to Wisconsin and eastern Texas. The species has been widely introduced and cultivated in temperate regions worldwide, including Europe, South America (Chile), Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia. Commercial production is concentrated in the United States (especially Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, Georgia), Canada (British Columbia, Quebec), Chile, Peru, Poland, and Spain.

Diet

Requires acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter with pH 4.5-5.5. Prefers full sun exposure (6-8 hours daily) for optimal fruit production but tolerates partial shade. Benefits from consistent moisture, especially during fruit development, but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Performs best with mulching to maintain soil moisture and temperature. Requires adequate nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, with special attention to iron availability in acidic conditions.

Behavior

Highbush blueberry exhibits indeterminate growth with new shoot production from both the crown and existing stems. The plant produces flower buds in late summer and fall on current season's growth, which overwinter and bloom the following spring. Leaf emergence and flowering occur simultaneously in early to mid-spring depending on climate. Fruit development takes 2-3 months from flowering to ripeness. The species requires cross-pollination for optimal fruit set, though some self-pollination occurs. Plants undergo winter dormancy requiring 800-1000 chill hours (below 7°C) for proper flowering. Reproduction & life cycle
