How to identify
Large, robust fish with a fusiform body reaching up to 3 meters in length and over 600 kg in weight. Distinguished by metallic blue dorsal coloration fading to silvery-white on the belly, with a relatively short pectoral fin that does not reach beyond the start of the second dorsal fin. The first dorsal fin is yellow or bluish, while the second dorsal fin and anal fin are reddish-brown. Finlets behind the second dorsal and anal fins are yellow with black edges. The tail (caudal fin) is deeply forked and crescent-shaped.
Habitat
Pelagic waters of the open ocean, typically in temperate and subtropical regions. Bluefin tuna range from surface waters to depths exceeding 1,000 meters. They prefer cooler waters compared to other tuna species and are often found in areas with water temperatures between 10-25°C. Juveniles may be found in coastal waters, while adults frequent both coastal and offshore environments.
Distribution

Spawning occurs April-June in Gulf of Mexico and May-July in Mediterranean Sea.
