The Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) is a small, widespread butterfly with white wings marked by black spots, originally native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Now one of the world's most successful invasive species, it has colonized North America, Australia, and New Zealand, where its caterpillars are significant agricultural pests on cabbage and related crops.

Overview

The Cabbage White butterfly is among the most familiar and widely distributed butterflies globally. Adults display predominantly white wings with distinctive black markings: males typically have one black spot on each forewing, while females have two. The species belongs to the family Pieridae, commonly known as the whites and sulphurs. Despite its delicate appearance, this butterfly is remarkably adaptable and thrives in disturbed habitats, agricultural areas, and gardens. Originally native to the Palearctic region spanning Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia, Pieris rapae has become a highly successful invasive species since the mid-19th century. It was accidentally introduced to Quebec, Canada around 1860 and subsequently spread across North America within decades. Similar introductions occurred in Australia (1929) and New Zealand (1930), where it quickly became established. The butterfly's success is largely attributed to its association with plants in the family Brassicaceae, particularly cultivated crops like cabbage, broccoli, kale, and cauliflower. The caterpillar stage causes considerable damage to these crops, making P. rapae one of the most economically important agricultural pests worldwide. Despite this pest status, the butterfly plays a role in pollination and serves as food for various predators and parasitoids. Adult Cabbage Whites are active fliers, frequently seen in gardens, fields, and parks from early spring through autumn. They exhibit rapid, erratic flight patterns and are often observed nectaring on a wide variety of flowers, showing little selectivity in their choice of nectar sources.

How to identify

Adults have a wingspan of 32-47 mm (1.3-1.9 inches). Wings are predominantly white with black tips on the forewings. Males display one black spot on each forewing, while females have two spots. The underwing (ventral) side is pale yellowish-white with faint grayish-green markings. The body is black dorsally and covered with white hairs. Caterpillars are velvety green with a thin yellow stripe along the back and yellow dashes along the sides, reaching about 25 mm in length when fully grown. Eggs are pale yellow, bullet-shaped, and laid singly on host plant leaves. No distinctive calls or sounds are produced.

Habitat

Highly adaptable to various open and disturbed habitats including agricultural fields, vegetable gardens, urban parks, roadsides, meadows, and waste areas. Shows strong preference for areas with Brassicaceae plants. Thrives in human-modified landscapes and is rarely found in undisturbed native habitats or dense forests. Found from sea level to moderate elevations, occasionally up to 2000 meters.

Distribution

Native to Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia eastward to Japan. Introduced and established in North America (throughout United States and Canada), Australia, New Zealand, and parts of South America. Now found on every continent except Antarctica and South America (limited presence). One of the most widespread butterfly species globally, particularly abundant in temperate regions with agriculture.

Diet

Adults feed on nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants including dandelions, asters, mints, clover, and various garden flowers. Caterpillars are specialized herbivores feeding primarily on plants in the Brassicaceae family (cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, mustards, radish, turnip) and occasionally nasturtiums (Tropaeolaceae). Larvae consume leaves, creating irregular holes and can completely defoliate plants when populations are high.

Behavior

Adults are diurnal and active in sunny weather, with peak activity during midday hours. Flight is characteristically rapid and erratic, making individuals difficult to follow. Males patrol territories and actively search for females. Both sexes readily visit flowers for nectar. Females carefully select host plants for oviposition, using chemoreceptors on their feet to identify suitable Brassicaceae. Multiple generations occur per year (2-3 in cooler climates, up to 5-6 in warmer regions). Adults may migrate or disperse considerable distances. Caterpillars are solitary feeders and rest along leaf midribs where their green coloration provides camouflage.

Reproduction & life cycle

Females lay pale yellow, elongated eggs singly on the underside of host plant leaves, typically on younger growth. Each female can lay 300-400 eggs over her lifetime. Eggs hatch in 3-7 days depending on temperature. Caterpillars pass through 4-5 instars over 2-3 weeks, feeding extensively on foliage. Pupation occurs away from the host plant on stems, fences, or buildings. The chrysalis is attached by a silk girdle and cremastral hooks, and may be green or brown depending on the substrate. Pupal stage lasts 1-2 weeks in summer; individuals from late-season broods overwinter as pupae in diapause, emerging the following spring. Complete life cycle from egg to adult takes approximately 3-8 weeks depending on temperature.

When to look

Adults can be seen from early spring through late autumn (March to November in temperate regions). Multiple overlapping generations mean adults are present throughout the warmer months. In mild climates, some flight activity may occur year-round. Peak abundance typically occurs in mid-summer. Overwinters as pupae in temperate regions.

Cultural significance

While lacking deep folklore traditions, the Cabbage White is widely recognized as a garden pest and has cultural significance as one of the first butterflies many people learn to identify. In introduced regions, it serves as a teaching example of invasive species ecology and biological control, as various parasitoid wasps (particularly Cotesia glomerata and C. rubecula) are used for integrated pest management. The species has been extensively studied in scientific research on host plant selection, chemical ecology, and insect navigation. Its ubiquity in urban environments makes it an important species for citizen science and butterfly monitoring programs.
