Overview

Prunus serrulata is a medium-sized deciduous tree belonging to the Rosaceae family, native to Japan, Korea, and China. The tree typically reaches heights of 8-12 meters and is characterized by its horizontal branching pattern and smooth, gray-brown bark with prominent lenticels. The species name 'serrulata' refers to its serrated leaf margins. The tree is most famous for its ornamental flowers, which bloom profusely in early to mid-spring before or alongside leaf emergence. Flowers can be single or double, with colors ranging from pure white to deep pink depending on the cultivar. Hundreds of cultivars have been developed over centuries of selective breeding, particularly in Japan where cherry blossom viewing ('hanami') is a deeply rooted cultural tradition. Cherry blossoms are ephemeral, typically lasting only one to two weeks, making them powerful symbols of the transient nature of life in Japanese culture and philosophy. The trees are widely planted in parks, gardens, and along streets in temperate regions worldwide. While they produce small, dark fruits, these are generally bitter and not commercially significant, as the tree is grown primarily for ornamental purposes. Prunus serrulata thrives in temperate climates with distinct seasons and requires a period of winter chilling to produce flowers. The tree has moderate drought tolerance once established but performs best with regular moisture and well-drained soil.

How to identify

Prunus serrulata is identified by its alternate, ovate to lanceolate leaves with sharply serrated margins and prominent veining, measuring 5-12 cm in length. The bark is smooth, reddish-brown to gray with horizontal lenticels. Flowers appear in clusters (umbels) of 2-5, each blossom 2-4 cm in diameter with five petals in wild forms (many more in cultivated varieties), ranging from white to pink. The tree reaches 8-12 meters in height with a spreading, rounded crown. Leaves emerge bronze or reddish, turning green in summer and developing yellow, orange, or red autumn colors. Small, spherical drupes (cherries) are black when ripe but are rarely noticed.

Habitat

Prunus serrulata grows naturally in mountain forests and woodland edges at elevations up to 2,000 meters. It prefers well-drained, fertile soils in full sun to partial shade. In cultivation, the tree is widely planted in urban parks, gardens, temple grounds, and as street trees in temperate climates.

Distribution

Native to Japan, Korea, and China. Widely cultivated throughout temperate regions of North America, Europe, Asia, and parts of Australia and New Zealand. Major ornamental plantings exist in Washington D.C., Tokyo, Kyoto, Vancouver, and numerous other cities worldwide.

Diet

As a photosynthetic plant, Prunus serrulata requires full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0-7.0) rich in organic matter. The tree benefits from moderate fertilization in early spring and requires adequate water during establishment and dry periods.

Behavior

Prunus serrulata exhibits a spreading growth habit with horizontal branching that becomes more pronounced with age. The tree is deciduous, losing its leaves in autumn after displaying fall colors. Flowering occurs on previous year's growth, with buds forming in late summer and remaining dormant through winter. Bloom timing is temperature-dependent, typically occurring when cumulative warm temperatures reach a threshold after winter chilling requirements are met. The tree may produce root suckers and can spread vegetatively under some conditions.

Reproduction & life cycle

Prunus serrulata flowers in early to mid-spring, with exact timing varying by climate and cultivar. Flowers are pollinated by bees and other insects. The tree produces small drupes (cherries) that ripen in early summer and are dispersed by birds. However, many ornamental cultivars are sterile or have reduced fertility due to their double-flowered nature. Propagation is commonly achieved through grafting cultivars onto rootstock, or by softwood or hardwood cuttings. Seeds require cold stratification for germination. Trees typically begin flowering at 3-5 years of age.

When to look

Best viewed in spring (March-May in Northern Hemisphere, depending on latitude and local climate) when flowers bloom. Autumn foliage colors appear in October-November in temperate regions.

Cultural significance

Cherry blossoms hold profound cultural significance in Japan, where hanami (flower viewing) has been practiced for over a thousand years, originally by the imperial court and samurai elite, now by all levels of society. The blooms symbolize the transient nature of life, beauty, and renewal in Japanese culture and appear extensively in art, poetry, and literature. Cherry blossom trees were gifted by Japan to the United States in 1912, resulting in the famous trees around Washington D.C.'s Tidal Basin and annual cherry blossom festivals. In Korea, cherry blossoms also hold cultural importance. The tree appears in traditional medicine in East Asia, though ornamental use far exceeds medicinal applications.
