The Coast Redwood is the world's tallest tree species, native to a narrow coastal strip of California and southern Oregon. These massive conifers can exceed 100 meters in height and live for over 2,000 years in their foggy coastal habitat.

Overview

Sequoia sempervirens, the Coast Redwood, is an evergreen coniferous tree belonging to the cypress family and is endemic to the Pacific coast of North America. It holds the distinction of being the tallest tree species on Earth, with the current record holder, Hyperion, measuring 115.9 meters (380.3 feet) tall. These magnificent trees thrive in a narrow band along the coast where summer fog provides essential moisture and moderates temperatures. Coast Redwoods have remarkable longevity, with many individuals exceeding 2,000 years of age. They possess thick, fibrous, reddish-brown bark that can be up to 30 centimeters thick, providing exceptional fire resistance. The trees are adapted to regenerate after disturbances through both seed production and vegetative sprouting from their base and roots, a trait that allows them to persist in their dynamic coastal forest ecosystem. These trees play a critical ecological role in their native range, creating unique forest ecosystems with high moisture retention, supporting diverse understory communities, and providing habitat for numerous species including the endangered Marbled Murrelet. Coast Redwoods are also remarkable carbon sequestrators, storing more carbon per acre than any other forest type on Earth. Their old-growth forests represent some of the most productive and biodiverse temperate ecosystems in the world. Historically, Coast Redwoods covered approximately 2 million acres, but extensive logging in the 19th and 20th centuries reduced old-growth stands to less than 5% of their original extent. Today, conservation efforts focus on protecting remaining old-growth forests and managing second-growth stands. The species has significant economic importance for timber production due to its resistance to decay and attractive wood grain, though sustainable forestry practices are now more widely implemented.

How to identify

Coast Redwoods are identified by their immense height, straight columnar trunks, and distinctive reddish-brown fibrous bark that is deeply furrowed. The foliage consists of flat, needle-like leaves arranged in two rows along the twigs, with leaves 15-25 millimeters long on main branches and shorter, scale-like leaves on cone-bearing shoots. The crown is conical when young, becoming irregular and rounded with age, often with multiple reiterated trunks in the upper canopy. Seed cones are small (15-32 mm long), ellipsoidal, and woody, containing 3-7 seeds per scale. The base of mature trees often features large burls and surrounding rings of clonal sprouts.

Habitat

Coast Redwoods inhabit a narrow fog belt along the Pacific coast, typically within 50 kilometers of the ocean and below 1,000 meters elevation. They require consistently moist conditions provided by summer fog and abundant winter rainfall (typically 640-3,800 mm annually). These trees grow best on deep, well-drained alluvial flats and lower slopes with access to groundwater, though they also occur on steeper terrain. They form dense forests that create deeply shaded, humid microclimates with rich understories of ferns, sorrel, and shade-tolerant shrubs.

Distribution

Coast Redwoods are endemic to a narrow coastal strip extending approximately 750 kilometers from southwestern Oregon (Curry County) south through California to southern Monterey County. The range is generally confined to areas influenced by coastal fog, running from sea level to about 920 meters elevation in the north and reaching 1,000 meters in the south. The species reaches its greatest abundance in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties in California.

Diet

Coast Redwoods require deep, well-drained, acidic soils rich in organic matter, though they can tolerate a range of soil types. They thrive in partial to full sun but young trees can tolerate considerable shade. The species has a unique ability to absorb water directly through its foliage from fog, with up to 40% of the tree's water needs met by fog drip during the dry summer months. Redwoods have high nutrient requirements and benefit from the constant input of organic matter in their native forest ecosystems.

Behavior

Coast Redwoods exhibit remarkable regenerative capabilities, sprouting vigorously from stumps, roots, and burls after disturbance such as fire or logging. They commonly form fairy rings of clonal stems around parent trees. The trees develop extensive shallow root systems that spread widely (often 20-30 meters from the trunk) but rarely extend deeper than 3-4 meters, requiring interlocking with neighboring trees for stability. Mature trees develop complex canopy structures with reiterated trunks and aerial roots, creating three-dimensional forest canopies that support epiphytic communities including other tree species.

Reproduction & life cycle

Coast Redwoods reproduce both sexually through seeds and vegetatively through sprouting. Trees typically begin producing cones at 5-15 years of age. Pollination occurs in winter (December-February), with small pollen cones releasing wind-dispersed pollen. Seed cones mature in one season and release tiny seeds (3-4 mm long with two lateral wings) in autumn. Seeds require bare mineral soil and consistent moisture for germination. Vegetative reproduction is extensive, with dormant buds in burls and roots capable of sprouting throughout the tree's life, allowing genetic individuals to persist for thousands of years even as individual trunks age and die.

When to look

Coast Redwoods are evergreen and visible year-round. Pollen cones appear in winter (December-February), seed cones mature in late summer to autumn (August-October), and new growth emerges in spring (March-May). The foggy summer season (June-September) is critical for the trees' water balance and showcases the atmospheric conditions they require.

Cultural significance

Coast Redwoods have profound cultural significance for indigenous peoples including the Yurok, Tolowa, Chilula, and other tribes who used the wood for planks in housing construction, canoe building, and crafting implements. The decay-resistant wood was highly valued but living trees were also revered. European American settlement brought intensive logging beginning in the 1850s, making redwood lumber a cornerstone of California's economy. Conservation movements in the early 20th century, led by organizations like the Save the Redwoods League (founded 1918), resulted in the protection of significant groves. Today, redwood forests are iconic symbols of California's natural heritage and major tourist attractions, visited by millions annually in parks such as Muir Woods and Redwood National and State Parks.
