Parasteatoda tepidariorum, commonly known as the common house spider, is a synanthropic cobweb spider found worldwide in human dwellings. This small brown spider builds irregular tangled webs in corners, windows, and other sheltered locations indoors and outdoors.

Overview

The common house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum) is a cosmopolitan species belonging to the cobweb spider family Theridiidae. Originally native to Europe, it has spread globally through human commerce and now thrives in close association with human habitation. These spiders are among the most frequently encountered arachnids in homes, garages, sheds, and other human structures across temperate and tropical regions. This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with females being larger and more robust than males. The spiders construct irregular three-dimensional webs composed of sticky capture threads that effectively trap crawling and flying insects. Unlike some other house-dwelling spiders, P. tepidariorum is a true cobweb builder, creating the characteristic tangled webs often seen in corners and undisturbed areas. Common house spiders are generally non-aggressive toward humans and play a beneficial role in controlling household insect populations. They are primarily nocturnal hunters that wait in their webs for prey to become ensnared. The species demonstrates remarkable adaptability to indoor environments, tolerating the relatively stable temperature and humidity conditions found in human buildings. Despite their ubiquity, common house spiders are harmless to humans. Their venom is designed to subdue small invertebrate prey and their fangs rarely penetrate human skin. When they do bite in defensive situations, the effects are typically mild and localized.

How to identify

Adult females measure 5-8 mm in body length, while males are smaller at 3.8-4.7 mm. The coloration ranges from yellowish-brown to dark brown or gray, with darker chevron-like patterns on the abdomen. The cephalothorax is typically lighter than the abdomen. Legs are relatively long and banded with lighter and darker segments. The abdomen is oval-shaped and often appears mottled or spotted. Females have more bulbous abdomens, especially when gravid, while males possess enlarged pedipalps used in mating. The irregular, tangled cobwebs in corners and sheltered spots are a key identifying feature of their presence.

Habitat

Common house spiders primarily inhabit human structures including houses, barns, garages, sheds, and warehouses. They prefer sheltered, undisturbed locations such as window frames, ceiling corners, closets, basements, and attics. Outdoors, they can be found under eaves, in rock crevices, hollow trees, and other protected spots. They favor areas with low air movement where their delicate webs remain intact and where prey insects are likely to wander.

Distribution

Originally native to Europe, Parasteatoda tepidariorum is now cosmopolitan, found on every continent except Antarctica. The species has established populations throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Its global distribution is directly linked to human activity and international commerce. It thrives in temperate and subtropical regions but has adapted to a wide range of climatic zones through its association with temperature-controlled human dwellings.

Diet

Common house spiders are carnivorous, feeding primarily on small insects and other arthropods. Their diet includes flies, mosquitoes, moths, ants, beetles, and other household insects that become trapped in their webs. They may also consume other small spiders. The spider detects prey vibrations through the web strands, quickly approaches to bite and inject venom, then wraps the prey in silk before feeding. They can survive extended periods without food, sometimes several weeks to months.

Behavior

This species is primarily nocturnal and sedentary, spending most of its time in or near its web waiting for prey. Females remain in their webs almost constantly, while males are more mobile, especially when searching for mates. When disturbed, they may drop from the web on a silk thread or retreat to a sheltered corner. The spiders regularly repair and modify their webs, removing debris and damaged sections. They are not aggressive and typically flee from threats rather than bite. Multiple individuals may inhabit the same general area without direct interaction.

Reproduction & life cycle

Females construct one or more spherical egg sacs containing 100-400 eggs each, wrapping them in brown or tan silk and suspending them within the web. A single female may produce up to 17 egg sacs during her lifetime, though 2-3 is more typical per season. Eggs hatch after about 7-10 days, and spiderlings remain in the sac for several more days before emerging. Young spiders undergo several molts before reaching maturity, typically 7-10 instars over 2-3 months. Males seek out females in their webs for mating, performing courtship behaviors involving web plucking to signal their presence and intentions.

When to look

Active year-round indoors where temperature is stable. In outdoor or unheated structures, activity peaks in late summer and autumn. Egg sacs are most commonly observed in spring and summer months. Males are more visible when searching for mates in late summer and early fall.

Cultural significance

The common house spider features prominently in folklore and cultural attitudes toward spiders in general. In many Western cultures, cobwebs are associated with neglect, haunted houses, and Halloween imagery. Some traditions consider house spiders as beneficial creatures that bring good luck or indicate a healthy home ecosystem. The species has contributed to both arachnophobia and efforts to educate the public about the beneficial nature of spiders in controlling pest populations. They are frequently used in educational settings to teach about spider biology and ecology due to their availability and harmless nature.
