Coral (Staghorn)
Staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) is a branching reef-building coral native to the Caribbean Sea and western Atlantic Ocean. Once dominant in shallow reef environments, it has experienced severe population declines due to disease, bleaching, and habitat degradation.
Overview
Staghorn coral is one of the most important reef-building corals in the Caribbean, named for its distinctive cylindrical branches that resemble deer antlers. This species forms large thickets that provide critical three-dimensional habitat for hundreds of fish and invertebrate species. Colonies can grow rapidly, extending branch tips up to 10-20 centimeters per year under favorable conditions, making it one of the fastest-growing Caribbean corals. Historically, A. cervicornis dominated shallow reef zones throughout the Caribbean, sometimes forming monospecific stands covering extensive areas. These dense thickets created complex habitat structures that supported diverse marine communities and contributed significantly to reef accretion and shoreline protection. The species typically thrives in water depths of 1-15 meters where sunlight is abundant and water movement is moderate. Since the 1980s, staghorn coral populations have declined by over 90% throughout much of their range due to white-band disease, coral bleaching events, hurricane damage, predation, and other stressors. This catastrophic decline has fundamentally altered Caribbean reef ecosystems and prompted intensive conservation efforts including coral restoration programs, disease monitoring, and protective legislation. The species is now listed as Critically Endangered and is protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Conservation efforts focus on coral gardening and outplanting, where fragments are grown in nurseries and transplanted to degraded reefs. These restoration programs have shown promise in some locations, though long-term survival depends on addressing broader threats such as ocean warming, acidification, and water quality degradation.
How to identify
Staghorn coral forms colonies of cylindrical branches 5-20 cm in diameter that grow upward and outward in irregular patterns resembling antlers. Branches are golden brown, tan, or pale brown in color, with lighter-colored growing tips. Colonies can reach several meters in diameter. Individual polyps are small (1-2 mm) and extend primarily at night. The coral surface has a rough texture with prominent corallites (skeletal cups). Unlike elkhorn coral, branches are more cylindrical and uniform rather than flattened.
Habitat
Staghorn coral inhabits shallow reef environments, typically at depths of 1-15 meters, though it can occur to 30 meters. It prefers areas with moderate water movement, high light levels, and hard substrate for attachment. The species grows on reef crests, fore-reefs, and back-reef zones, often forming dense thickets in optimal conditions. It requires clear, warm tropical waters with temperatures between 23-29°C and is sensitive to sedimentation and poor water quality.
Distribution
Native to the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, Florida Keys, and along the western Atlantic coast from southern Florida through the Caribbean islands to northern South America and parts of Central America. The species historically occurred throughout shallow reef habitats in this region but has disappeared from many former locations due to population declines.
Diet
Like all reef-building corals, staghorn coral is a mixotroph that obtains nutrition through symbiotic zooxanthellae (photosynthetic algae) living in its tissues and through heterotrophic feeding. The zooxanthellae provide up to 90% of the coral's energy through photosynthesis. The coral polyps also capture zooplankton and organic particles from the water column using their tentacles, primarily feeding at night.
Behavior
Staghorn coral colonies grow through asexual budding and fragmentation, with branches extending rapidly at their tips during optimal conditions. Fragments broken by storms or physical disturbance can reattach to substrate and form new colonies, contributing to colony expansion. Polyps extend their tentacles primarily at night to feed on zooplankton. The coral exhibits bleaching behavior during thermal stress, expelling its symbiotic algae and turning white. Colonies may compete for space with other corals through overgrowth or chemical warfare.
Reproduction & life cycle
Staghorn coral reproduces both sexually and asexually. Sexual reproduction occurs through broadcast spawning, typically 5-7 days after the full moon in August or September, when colonies simultaneously release gametes (eggs and sperm) into the water column for external fertilization. Resulting larvae drift in the plankton for days to weeks before settling on hard substrate. Asexual reproduction occurs through fragmentation when branches break off and reattach to form new colonies, which is an important natural propagation method and the basis for coral restoration efforts. Colonies may reach reproductive maturity in 3-5 years.
When to look
Sexual reproduction spawning occurs in late summer (August-September) following full moons. Growth is fastest during warm summer months. Visible year-round in areas where populations persist, though colonies may appear paler or bleached during warm-water events.
Cultural significance
Staghorn coral has significant ecological and economic importance as a foundation species supporting Caribbean reef ecosystems that provide fisheries, tourism revenue, and coastal protection. In recent decades, it has become an icon of coral reef conservation and climate change impacts. The species is central to Caribbean reef restoration programs and has legal protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and various Caribbean national laws.
