Anisoptera is a suborder of ancient predatory insects commonly known as dragonflies, characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. They are agile aerial hunters found near freshwater habitats worldwide, playing crucial roles in controlling mosquito and other insect populations.
Overview
Dragonflies (Anisoptera) are among the most ancient flying insects, with fossils dating back over 300 million years. They belong to the order Odonata and are distinguished from damselflies (Zygoptera) by their robust build, the way they hold their wings out flat at rest, and their generally more powerful flight. These insects are masterful aerial predators with nearly 360-degree vision thanks to their enormous compound eyes that can contain up to 30,000 individual lenses. Anisoptera species inhabit every continent except Antarctica, thriving wherever freshwater is present. They exhibit remarkable diversity in size, coloration, and behavior, ranging from tiny species less than 20 millimeters long to giants with wingspans exceeding 16 centimeters. Their bodies often display brilliant metallic blues, greens, reds, and yellows, with patterns that vary by species, age, and sex. As both predators in their aquatic nymphal stage and aerial adult stage, dragonflies occupy important ecological niches. Adults are voracious hunters capable of catching prey mid-flight with success rates exceeding 95%. Their aquatic larvae, called nymphs or naiads, are equally fierce predators in ponds, streams, and wetlands. The metamorphosis from aquatic nymph to aerial adult is one of nature's most dramatic transformations. Dragonflies are sensitive indicators of freshwater ecosystem health, with their presence or absence reflecting water quality and habitat integrity. Climate change and habitat loss pose threats to many species, though the conservation status varies widely across the approximately 3,000 described species in this suborder.
How to identify
Dragonflies can be identified by their stout bodies, large compound eyes that meet or nearly meet at the top of the head, and two pairs of strong, transparent wings with intricate venation. Unlike damselflies, they hold their wings perpendicular to their body when at rest. Adults typically measure 20-150mm in length with wingspans ranging from 20-160mm depending on species. Body coloration varies widely including metallic blues, greens, reds, yellows, and black patterns. Males are often more brightly colored than females. Wings may be clear or patterned with spots and bands. They do not produce calls but their wings create a distinctive rustling or rattling sound during flight.
Habitat
Dragonflies require freshwater habitats for breeding and larval development, including ponds, lakes, marshes, streams, rivers, and temporary pools. Adults may range far from water while hunting but return to aquatic habitats to mate and lay eggs. They prefer areas with emergent vegetation, perches such as sticks and reeds, and open areas for aerial hunting. Different species show preferences for still versus flowing water, sunny versus shaded locations, and varying water quality conditions.
Distribution
Anisoptera has a cosmopolitan distribution found on all continents except Antarctica. Species diversity is highest in tropical and subtropical regions, though many species inhabit temperate zones. Some species are highly localized endemics, while others like certain members of the families Libellulidae and Aeshnidae have wide distributions across multiple continents. Distribution patterns reflect both historical biogeography and current availability of suitable freshwater habitats.
Diet
Adult dragonflies are carnivorous aerial predators that feed primarily on mosquitoes, midges, flies, bees, butterflies, moths, and other flying insects captured in flight using their spiny legs formed into a basket. They are visual hunters that rely on their exceptional eyesight. Aquatic nymphs are also carnivorous, feeding on aquatic invertebrates, tadpoles, and small fish using an extendable labium (modified lower lip) to capture prey. Both adults and nymphs are opportunistic feeders consuming whatever prey is available and appropriately sized.
Behavior
Dragonflies are diurnal insects most active in warm, sunny weather. They are powerful fliers capable of hovering, flying backwards, and reaching speeds up to 50 km/h in some species. Males are highly territorial, establishing and defending hunting and breeding territories through aerial displays and combat. They exhibit various hunting strategies including hawking (continuous patrol), perching (sit-and-wait), and hovering. Adults thermoregulate through basking behaviors and by adjusting body angle to the sun. Many species exhibit seasonal migrations, with some traveling hundreds of kilometers.
Reproduction & life cycle
Dragonflies undergo incomplete metamorphosis with three life stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Mating occurs in flight or on perches, with males grasping females behind the head using terminal appendages while females curve their abdomen forward to receive sperm, forming a characteristic wheel or heart shape. Females lay eggs in or near water, either inserting them into plant tissue or dropping them onto the water surface. Nymphs develop underwater through 8-15 molts over periods ranging from a few months to several years depending on species and environmental conditions. Emergence involves the nymph climbing out of the water where the adult dragonfly emerges from the nymphal skin. Adults typically live from a few weeks to several months.
When to look
Adults are most visible in late spring, summer, and early fall in temperate regions. In tropical areas, they may be present year-round with peaks during rainy seasons. Migration periods for migratory species occur in spring and autumn. Emergence events happen primarily in late spring and early summer when water temperatures rise.
Cultural significance
Dragonflies hold significant cultural meaning across many societies. In Japanese culture, they symbolize strength, courage, and happiness, and appear frequently in art and poetry. Native American traditions associate them with swiftness and activity. In European folklore, they were sometimes called 'devil's darning needles' with superstitions about them sewing up the mouths of misbehaving children. Some cultures use dragonflies in traditional medicine. They have inspired technological innovations including helicopter design and micro-drone development. Today they are popular subjects for nature photography and symbols of environmental health.
