These trees are the most massive living organisms on Earth by trunk volume, with the largest specimen, General Sherman, containing approximately 1,487 cubic meters of wood. Giant Sequoias are characterized by their massive, columnar trunks covered in thick, fibrous, cinnamon-red bark that can be up to 60 centimeters thick, providing exceptional fire resistance. These ancient trees grow in scattered groves between 1,400 and 2,150 meters elevation on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Only about 75 groves exist today, containing fewer than 80,000 mature trees. Giant Sequoias require specific environmental conditions including winter snowpack for moisture, periodic fire for regeneration, and well-drained soils. Their longevity is legendary, with many specimens exceeding 2,000 years and the oldest documented at over 3,200 years. Giant Sequoias play a crucial ecological role in their forest communities, creating unique microhabitats and influencing water cycling and nutrient distribution. Their thick bark and elevated crowns allow mature trees to survive most wildfires, though recent intense wildfires have killed significant numbers. The species has been widely planted as an ornamental tree in temperate regions worldwide, though it only achieves its greatest size in its native range. How to identify
Giant Sequoias are identified by their massive, tapered trunks with thick, fibrous, red-brown to cinnamon-colored bark with deep furrows. The foliage consists of small, scale-like, awl-shaped leaves (3-6 mm) that are blue-green and arranged spirally on the branches. The cones are egg-shaped, 4-7 cm long, initially green becoming red-brown, and may remain on the tree for up to 20 years. Mature trees develop a distinctive rounded crown, losing their lower branches, and can reach 50-85 meters in height with trunk diameters of 6-8 meters (up to 11 meters at the base).

Endemic to approximately 75 scattered groves along a 420-kilometer belt on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, USA. The range extends from Placer County in the north to Tulare County in the south, with the majority of groves located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and on surrounding National Forest lands.
Diet
As a photosynthetic tree, Giant Sequoia requires full sun exposure and well-drained, moisture-retentive soils with neutral to slightly acidic pH. The trees have shallow but extensive root systems (no taproot) that spread horizontally to access water and nutrients. They require consistent moisture from winter snowpack and benefit from periodic nutrient input from fire-recycled organic matter.
Behavior
Giant Sequoias exhibit remarkable fire adaptation, with thick bark protecting the cambium from heat damage. The trees require fire for successful regeneration as heat causes cones to dry and release seeds, while fire clears competing vegetation and creates mineral soil seedbeds. Growth is relatively rapid in youth (up to 60 cm per year in height), slowing with age. Trees develop extensive but shallow root systems and maintain photosynthesis year-round. They continue adding wood volume throughout their lives, with mature trees adding approximately 1 cubic meter of wood annually.
Reproduction & life cycle
Giant Sequoias are monoecious, producing both male and female cones on the same tree. Trees begin producing cones at 12-20 years of age. Tiny seeds (3-5 mm long, weighing 4-5 mg) number 150-250 per cone, with mature trees producing approximately 2,000 cones and 300,000-400,000 seeds annually. Seeds are primarily dispersed by wind and require bare mineral soil for germination. Seedling establishment is episodic and dependent on favorable conditions following fire. The trees can also reproduce vegetatively through basal sprouting after trunk damage, though this is uncommon.
When to look
Giant Sequoias are evergreen and can be observed year-round. The best viewing conditions are typically late spring through fall (May-October) when mountain roads are accessible. Male cones release pollen in late winter/early spring (February-March), while seed release occurs following cone maturation, often triggered by summer heat or fire. Snow covers lower branches in winter months (November-April).
Cultural significance
Giant Sequoias hold profound cultural significance as symbols of longevity, resilience, and natural grandeur. Indigenous peoples, including the Mono and Yokuts, traditionally used the area where sequoias grow and had names for these impressive trees. The trees became icons of American conservation when efforts in the late 19th century led to the establishment of Sequoia National Park in 1890, the second national park in the United States. Named specimens like General Sherman, General Grant, and President have become pilgrimage destinations. The species features prominently in environmental education and conservation messaging worldwide.
