The underground rhizome is the economically important part, characterized by its pale yellowish interior, fibrous texture, and pungent, spicy-sweet aroma due to bioactive compounds including gingerols and shogaols. Ginger has been cultivated for over 5,000 years, spreading from its Southeast Asian origins along ancient spice trade routes to become one of the world's most important spice crops. How to identify
Herbaceous plant 60-120 cm tall with erect pseudostems formed by overlapping leaf sheaths. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, 15-30 cm long, and arranged alternately in two ranks. The rhizome is irregularly branched, knobby, and pale brown externally with pale yellow aromatic flesh inside. When present, inflorescences emerge on separate shoots with cone-like spikes of greenish-yellow flowers with purple-streaked lips. The distinctive pungent, spicy aroma of crushed rhizome is diagnostic.
Habitat
Cultivated in tropical and subtropical gardens, plantations, and agricultural fields. Requires warm, humid conditions with well-drained, rich loamy soil. Grows best in partial shade beneath tree canopies or shade structures. Not found in wild habitats as it exists only as a cultigen.
Distribution
Origin believed to be tropical Southeast Asia, possibly the Indian subcontinent or southern China, though no wild populations exist. Behavior
Grows from rhizomes that produce upright pseudostems and leaves during the warm, wet season. In seasonal climates, aerial parts die back during cooler or drier periods while rhizomes remain dormant underground. Rhizomes branch and expand laterally, producing new shoots. Rarely flowers in cultivation; when flowering occurs, inflorescences appear on separate shoots from the leafy pseudostems. Propagates exclusively through vegetative division of rhizomes.
