Grasshoppers (Caelifera) are herbivorous jumping insects found on every continent except Antarctica. They are characterized by powerful hind legs, straight antennae, and the ability to produce distinctive chirping sounds.

Overview

Caelifera is a suborder of orthopteran insects commonly known as grasshoppers. These insects are among the most ancient living groups of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early Triassic period around 250 million years ago. Grasshoppers are distinguishable from their close relatives, the bush crickets or katydids (Ensifera), by their short antennae and different sound-producing mechanisms. Grasshoppers possess powerful enlarged hind femora and tibiae that enable them to leap distances many times their body length to escape predators. Most species have wings and can fly, though some are flightless. They have been significant to human agriculture both as devastating crop pests and as a traditional food source in many cultures. When grasshopper populations explode and they form migratory swarms, certain species are referred to as locusts. The suborder encompasses over 11,000 described species within approximately 2,400 genera. They exhibit tremendous diversity in size, coloration, and ecological adaptations. Grasshoppers play crucial roles in ecosystems as primary consumers of plant matter and as prey for numerous predators including birds, reptiles, and mammals. Their ability to convert plant cellulose into animal protein makes them ecologically significant in food webs.

How to identify

Grasshoppers typically range from 1-7 cm in length with robust bodies, large compound eyes, and characteristically short antennae (usually less than half body length). They possess three pairs of legs, with the hind legs noticeably enlarged and adapted for jumping. Most species have two pairs of wings: narrow, hardened forewings (tegmina) and broad, membranous hindwings folded beneath them. Coloration varies widely from greens and browns to bright patterns, often providing camouflage. Males produce species-specific sounds (stridulation) by rubbing pegs on their hind legs against thickened wing veins. Their chewing mouthparts (mandibles) are clearly visible. The pronotum (shield behind the head) extends downward over the sides of the thorax.

Habitat

Grasshoppers occupy diverse habitats including grasslands, meadows, prairies, savannas, forests, rainforests, deserts, and alpine zones. They are most abundant in open habitats with plentiful vegetation. Different species show preferences for specific plant communities, humidity levels, and altitudes. Some species are habitat specialists restricted to particular grassland types, while others are generalists occupying multiple habitat types.

Distribution

Grasshoppers are found on every continent except Antarctica, from sea level to elevations exceeding 4,000 meters. They are most diverse in tropical and subtropical regions but also thrive in temperate zones. Different families and subfamilies show distinct geographic distributions, with some lineages endemic to particular continents or regions.

Diet

Grasshoppers are predominantly herbivorous, feeding on grasses, forbs, and the leaves of various plants. Most are polyphagous (feeding on many plant species), though some are specialists on particular plant families. They use their powerful mandibles to chew plant tissue. A few species are omnivorous, occasionally consuming dead insects or animal feces for additional protein and nutrients. Feeding activity is typically greatest during warmer parts of the day.

Behavior

Grasshoppers are primarily diurnal and most active in warm, sunny conditions. They are strong jumpers, able to leap 20 times their body length, and many species are capable fliers. Males produce species-specific songs to attract females and defend territories. They are generally solitary, though some species exhibit density-dependent phase polymorphism, transforming from solitary to gregarious forms under crowded conditions. Grasshoppers use camouflage as their primary defense but may also flee by jumping or flying. Some species display warning coloration or can regurgitate noxious fluids when threatened. Basking behavior is common for thermoregulation.

Reproduction & life cycle

Grasshoppers undergo incomplete metamorphosis (hemimetabolism) with three life stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females deposit eggs in soil using a specialized ovipositor, often in egg pods containing 10-300 eggs surrounded by a protective foam. Eggs typically overwinter and hatch in spring or with the arrival of rains. Nymphs resemble small, wingless adults and molt 5-6 times over several weeks to months before reaching adulthood. Adults live for several weeks to months depending on species and environmental conditions. Most temperate species have one generation per year, while tropical species may have multiple generations.

When to look

Adults are most visible during warm months (late spring through autumn in temperate regions; year-round in tropical areas). Peak abundance typically occurs in mid to late summer. In seasonal climates, eggs overwinter and nymphs emerge in spring.

Cultural significance

Grasshoppers have been consumed as protein-rich food in many cultures across Africa, Asia, and the Americas for millennia and are increasingly recognized as sustainable food sources. They appear prominently in folklore, literature, and fables, including Aesop's 'The Ant and the Grasshopper.' In some Asian cultures, caged grasshoppers are kept for their songs. Biblical accounts describe locust plagues, and grasshopper swarms have shaped human history by causing famines. They are used in traditional medicine in some cultures and are popular subjects for scientific research on jumping mechanics, sound production, and sensory systems.
