The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, located off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It comprises nearly 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching over 2,300 kilometers, supporting extraordinary marine biodiversity.

Overview

The Great Barrier Reef is not a single species but an immense ecosystem composed of billions of tiny organisms called coral polyps belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. These colonial animals secrete calcium carbonate skeletons that form the structural foundation of the reef. The ecosystem hosts approximately 600 species of hard and soft corals, creating a complex three-dimensional habitat visible from space. The reef faces significant threats from climate change-induced coral bleaching, ocean acidification, crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, cyclones, and coastal pollution. How to identify

The reef is identified by its massive underwater structures of limestone calcium carbonate formations created by coral polyps. Individual coral colonies vary widely in form: branching staghorn corals (Acropora), massive brain corals (Platygyra), plate-like table corals, and delicate soft corals. Colors range from vibrant blues, purples, yellows, and reds in healthy corals to bleached white when stressed. The reef appears as turquoise shallow waters transitioning to deep blue ocean, with reef crests often visible at low tide.

Habitat

The Great Barrier Reef occupies warm, clear, shallow tropical and subtropical marine waters of the Coral Sea. Coral polyps require specific conditions: water temperatures between 20-28°C, high salinity, low nutrient levels, strong sunlight for symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, and minimal sedimentation. The reef spans from intertidal zones to depths of approximately 35-40 meters where light penetration allows coral growth.

Distribution

Located in the Coral Sea off the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, extending from Torres Strait near Papua New Guinea southward past the Tropic of Capricorn to just north of Bundaberg. The reef system spans approximately 344,400 square kilometers and stretches roughly 2,300 kilometers along the continental shelf.

Diet

Coral polyps obtain nutrition through a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae living in their tissues, which photosynthesize and provide up to 90% of the coral's energy needs. Polyps also capture zooplankton and small organisms from the water using stinging tentacles equipped with nematocysts. The broader reef ecosystem supports diverse feeding strategies: herbivorous parrotfish grazing on algae, filter-feeding sponges and clams, predatory sharks and groupers, and detritivores processing organic matter.

Behavior

Coral polyps extend tentacles primarily at night to feed on plankton while retracting during daylight. Colonial corals grow through asexual budding, with growth rates varying by species from millimeters to centimeters per year. The reef undergoes seasonal patterns of spawning, typically synchronized mass coral spawning events occurring annually following full moons in spring. Fish species exhibit complex behaviors including cleaning stations, territorial defense, schooling, and migrations. The ecosystem demonstrates intricate symbiotic relationships, competition for space, and succession following disturbances.

Reproduction & life cycle

Corals reproduce both sexually and asexually. Mass spawning events occur annually, typically in October-December following spring full moons, when corals simultaneously release eggs and sperm into the water column. Fertilized eggs develop into planktonic larvae (planulae) that drift for days to weeks before settling and metamorphosing into polyps. Asexual reproduction occurs through budding, fragmentation, and division, allowing colony expansion and reef recovery. Different coral species employ broadcast spawning or brooding strategies, with reproductive timing varying by latitude and water temperature.

When to look

Optimal visiting periods are April-November during the Australian dry season with calmer seas and better visibility. Mass coral spawning occurs October-December following spring full moons. Humpback whale migration occurs June-November. Manta ray aggregations peak May-August. Summer months (December-March) bring higher water temperatures, potential cyclones, and increased risk of coral bleaching, but also peak marine turtle nesting season.

Cultural significance

Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples have maintained spiritual, cultural, and subsistence connections to the reef for over 60,000 years, with over 70 Traditional Owner groups holding native title or claims. The reef features in Dreamtime stories, navigation knowledge, and traditional fishing practices. Scientifically, it serves as a crucial research site for marine biology, climate science, and conservation. Economically, it generates approximately AUD $6.4 billion annually through tourism, recreation, and fishing, supporting over 64,000 jobs. The reef symbolizes global marine conservation efforts and climate change impacts.
