Overview
The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is the largest predatory fish in the world, reaching lengths over 6 meters and weights exceeding 2,000 kilograms. This species has a distinctive countershaded coloration with a white underside and gray dorsal surface, along with a conical snout and large, serrated triangular teeth. Great whites are highly migratory and capable of traversing entire ocean basins, making long-distance movements between feeding and breeding areas. As apex predators, great white sharks play a crucial role in marine ecosystems by regulating populations of seals, sea lions, and other marine mammals. They are ectothermic but possess specialized blood vessels that allow them to maintain elevated body temperatures, giving them enhanced muscle performance in cold waters. This adaptation, along with their acute senses including electroreception, makes them highly effective hunters. Great white sharks face numerous threats including bycatch in fisheries, targeted fishing for their jaws and fins, and habitat degradation. Their slow growth rate, late sexual maturity, and low reproductive output make populations particularly vulnerable to overexploitation. How to identify
Great white sharks are identified by their robust, torpedo-shaped body with a pointed conical snout and large black eyes. Adults display countershading with a gray to blue-gray dorsal surface and white ventral surface, with a sharp color transition along the flanks. The first dorsal fin is large and triangular, and the caudal fin is crescent-shaped and nearly symmetrical. They possess large, triangular, serrated teeth that are visible even when the mouth is closed. Size ranges from 3.5 to 6+ meters in length, with females typically larger than males. A distinctive black spot is often present at the pectoral fin axil.
Habitat
Great white sharks inhabit temperate and tropical coastal and offshore waters, typically in areas with water temperatures between 12-24°C. They are commonly found near continental shelves, around seal and sea lion colonies, and in areas with productive upwelling zones. Juveniles tend to prefer warmer, shallower coastal waters, while adults range more widely and venture into deeper offshore waters. They are highly mobile and may be found from the surface down to depths exceeding 1,200 meters.
Distribution
Great white sharks are distributed globally in all major oceans, with significant populations in the coastal waters of the United States (California, Northeast), South Africa, Australia (particularly southern and western coasts), New Zealand, Chile, Japan, and the Mediterranean Sea. They are found in both temperate and warm-temperate waters, with seasonal movements often following prey migrations. Major aggregation sites include Guadalupe Island, the Farallon Islands, False Bay, and Neptune Islands.
Diet
Great white sharks are carnivorous apex predators with a diet that changes with age. Juveniles primarily feed on fish, rays, and smaller sharks. As they mature, their diet shifts to marine mammals including seals, sea lions, small toothed whales, and dolphin species. They also consume sea turtles, seabirds, and carrion including whale carcasses. Great whites employ various hunting strategies including surface breaching attacks on seals and ambush predation from below, using their countershading for camouflage.
Behavior
Great white sharks are generally solitary but may aggregate at feeding sites and demonstrate dominance hierarchies based on size and sex. They are highly migratory, undertaking seasonal movements of thousands of kilometers between coastal feeding areas and offshore regions. Some populations exhibit site fidelity, returning to the same areas annually. They use a variety of hunting techniques including breaching, in which they propel themselves completely out of the water when attacking surface prey. Great whites are capable of bursts of speed exceeding 56 km/h and can detect electrical fields as weak as one billionth of a volt.
Reproduction & life cycle
Great white sharks are ovoviviparous, with embryos developing inside eggs that remain within the mother's body until hatching. Gestation is estimated at 12-18 months, with females giving birth to litters of 2-14 pups, each measuring 1.2-1.5 meters at birth. Sexual maturity is reached late, with males maturing at approximately 26 years and 3.5-4 meters, and females at 33 years and 4.5-5 meters. Females reproduce only every 2-3 years. Mating has rarely been observed, and specific nursery areas remain largely unknown, though juveniles are often found in discrete coastal habitats.
When to look
Great white sharks can be observed year-round in many locations, but seasonal patterns exist based on prey availability. In California, aggregations peak in autumn and winter (September-February) near seal colonies. In South Africa, peak season is winter to early summer (May-September). In Australia, southern populations are more common in summer-autumn (December-May). Migration to offshore areas typically occurs in spring and summer.
Cultural significance
Great white sharks hold significant cultural importance in many coastal communities and feature prominently in media, particularly following the 1975 film 'Jaws,' which shaped public perception despite promoting misconceptions. Indigenous Australian Aboriginal cultures have traditional stories and art featuring these sharks. In modern times, they are important for ecotourism, with cage diving operations providing economic benefits to coastal communities while raising conservation awareness. They have become symbols of ocean conservation efforts and marine ecosystem health. Historically, their teeth were used as tools and ornaments by various cultures.
