The honey bee (Apis mellifera) is a highly social insect native to Europe, Africa, and western Asia, now distributed worldwide through human introduction. Best known for producing honey and pollinating crops, this species lives in colonies of thousands of individuals with a complex division of labor.

Overview

The western honey bee, Apis mellifera, is one of the most economically important insects globally due to its role in pollination and honey production. Originally native to Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, this species has been introduced to every continent except Antarctica. Honey bees are eusocial insects, living in colonies that can contain 20,000 to 80,000 individuals during peak season, including a single queen, hundreds of drones, and tens of thousands of female workers. The species exhibits remarkable behavioral complexity, including the famous waggle dance used to communicate the location of food sources to nestmates. Workers perform different tasks based on age, progressing from nursing duties to foraging as they mature. The colony functions as a superorganism, with individuals cooperating to regulate hive temperature, defend against predators, and store food for winter survival. Honey bees are critical pollinators for both wild plants and agricultural crops, contributing an estimated one-third of the food consumed by humans through their pollination services. However, managed and wild populations face significant challenges from parasites (especially Varroa mites), pathogens, pesticide exposure, habitat loss, and climate change. Colony Collapse Disorder, first widely reported in 2006, remains a concern for beekeepers worldwide. Despite challenges, Apis mellifera remains one of the most studied and managed insect species. Beekeeping (apiculture) has been practiced for thousands of years, and modern commercial operations transport hives to pollinate crops seasonally. The species shows considerable variation across its range, with over 25 recognized subspecies adapted to different climatic conditions.

How to identify

Worker honey bees measure 12-15 mm in length with fuzzy, golden-brown bodies marked with black bands across the abdomen. They have two pairs of membranous wings, large compound eyes, three simple eyes (ocelli) on top of the head, and distinctive branched (plumose) body hairs that aid in pollen collection. Workers possess pollen baskets (corbiculae) on their hind legs, visible as shiny, flattened areas surrounded by stiff hairs. Queens are larger (18-20 mm) with elongated abdomens, while drones are stouter with larger eyes that meet at the top of the head. The buzzing sound of flight is characteristic, typically around 250 Hz for workers.

Habitat

Honey bees nest in cavities such as hollow trees, rock crevices, or man-made hives. They prefer cavities with volumes of 15-80 liters, positioned 1-5 meters above ground with a small entrance. Foraging workers visit diverse habitats including meadows, gardens, agricultural fields, forests, and urban areas, wherever flowering plants provide nectar and pollen. The species tolerates a wide range of climates from tropical to cool temperate zones, though colonies require adequate insulation and food stores to survive cold winters.

Distribution

Native to Europe, Africa south of the Sahara, and western Asia extending to the Ural Mountains. Through human introduction, Apis mellifera now occurs on every continent except Antarctica, thriving in temperate and tropical regions of North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and eastern Asia. The species is absent only from extreme polar regions and the most arid deserts. Different subspecies show distinct native ranges, such as A. m. carnica in central Europe, A. m. scutellata in Africa, and A. m. ligustica in Italy.

Diet

Adult honey bees feed primarily on nectar (carbohydrate source) and pollen (protein source) from flowering plants. Foragers collect nectar from flowers and convert it to honey through enzymatic processing and evaporation within the hive. Pollen is packed into cells and partially fermented to create bee bread, used to feed larvae and young adult workers. A colony may collect 20-60 kg of pollen and produce 30-60 kg of honey annually. Bees show flower constancy, typically visiting one plant species per foraging trip. They prefer flowers offering high-quality rewards and can forage up to 5 km from the hive, though most activity occurs within 1-2 km.

Behavior

Honey bees are highly social with sophisticated communication systems, including the waggle dance that encodes distance and direction to food sources through figure-eight movements. Workers exhibit age polyethism, progressing through tasks: cell cleaning (days 1-3), nursing larvae (3-11), building comb and processing food (11-20), and foraging (20+ days until death). Colonies thermoregulate, maintaining brood areas at 33-36°C through collective fanning or heat generation. Defense is coordinated, with guard bees releasing alarm pheromones when threatened, recruiting defenders who sting intruders (workers die after stinging mammals due to barbed stingers). Swarming occurs when colonies reproduce: the old queen and 60% of workers leave to establish a new nest, while virgin queens emerge to inherit the original hive.

Reproduction & life cycle

Reproduction occurs at both individual and colony levels. The queen mates with 10-20 drones during one or more nuptial flights early in life, storing sperm to fertilize eggs for 2-5 years. She lays up to 2,000 eggs daily in peak season. Fertilized eggs become female workers (or queens if fed royal jelly), while unfertilized eggs develop into male drones through haplodiploidy. Worker larvae develop in 21 days, drones in 24, and queens in 16. Colony reproduction occurs through swarming, typically in spring or early summer when resources are abundant. Before swarming, workers build queen cells, and the colony divides when new queens are about to emerge.

When to look

Active year-round in warm climates; in temperate zones, most active spring through fall (March-October in Northern Hemisphere) with peak foraging during main flowering periods. Swarming typically occurs in late spring to early summer. Colonies cluster and become inactive during winter in cold climates, surviving on stored honey.

Cultural significance

Honey bees hold immense cultural significance across civilizations. Ancient Egyptians practiced beekeeping and depicted bees in hieroglyphs; honey was used in medicine and mummification. Bees appear in Greek mythology, Christian symbolism (representing industriousness and divine providence), and Islamic texts. Honey has been used medicinally for millennia as an antibacterial agent and wound dressing. Propolis and royal jelly are valued in traditional and alternative medicine. Bees symbolize community, diligence, and organization in numerous cultures. The products—honey, beeswax, propolis—have been essential to human economies for thousands of years, with beeswax used in candles, cosmetics, and art.
