Koi are domesticated ornamental fish derived from the Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus), also known as the common carp complex. Originally bred in Japan from wild carp stock imported from China, koi have been selectively cultivated for over 200 years to produce a stunning array of color patterns including white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The name 'koi' comes from the Japanese word 'nishikigoi,' meaning 'brocaded carp.' Koi are cyprinid fish with a robust, elongated body covered in large, regular scales. They possess barbels near the mouth, which they use for foraging in sediment. Selective breeding has produced dozens of recognized varieties based on coloration, pattern, and scalation, including Kohaku (white with red markings), Sanke, Showa, and many others. Premium specimens can be extremely valuable, with champion koi selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Though originally from temperate East Asia, koi are now cultivated globally in both outdoor ponds and indoor aquaria. They are hardy fish tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and temperatures. In proper conditions with adequate space and nutrition, koi can grow quite large and live for many decades. They have become important in both aquaculture and ornamental fishkeeping, representing a significant economic and cultural component of the global aquarium trade.

How to identify

Koi are large cyprinid fish with a thick, torpedo-shaped body and large scales. They possess two pairs of sensory barbels flanking the mouth. Body length typically ranges from 30-90 cm, though exceptional individuals may exceed 1 meter. Coloration is highly variable due to selective breeding, including solid colors and complex patterns of white, red, orange, yellow, black, and blue. The dorsal fin is long and continuous, while the caudal fin is moderately forked. Unlike goldfish, koi retain barbels and have a more elongated body shape.

Habitat

Koi inhabit slow-moving or still freshwater environments including ponds, lakes, and slow rivers. In the wild, their ancestor species (Amur carp) prefers vegetated waters with muddy substrates. Domesticated koi are kept in ornamental ponds, water gardens, and large aquaria. They tolerate a wide temperature range (2-35°C) but thrive in temperate conditions. Koi require well-oxygenated water and benefit from filtration systems in captive environments.

Distribution

The wild Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) is native to East Asia, including rivers and lakes in China, Vietnam, and the Amur River basin. Domesticated koi are now distributed globally, bred commercially in Japan, Israel, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. Feral populations exist in many regions where koi or common carp have been released or escaped, often becoming invasive species that disrupt native ecosystems.

Diet

Koi are omnivorous bottom-feeders with a diverse diet. In nature, they consume aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, aquatic plants, algae, and organic detritus. They use their barbels to detect food in sediment. In captivity, koi are fed specialized pelleted foods formulated with proteins, vitamins, and pigment enhancers. They also consume vegetables, fruits, and live foods such as worms and shrimp. Koi have no stomach and must be fed multiple small meals daily.

Behavior

Koi are social fish that often school together in groups. They are active during daylight hours and become less active in cold water, entering a torpid state in winter when temperatures drop below 10°C. Koi are intelligent and can be trained to hand-feed and recognize individual humans. They use their barbels to forage along pond bottoms, stirring up sediment. During breeding season, males develop breeding tubercles and actively chase females. Koi produce characteristic splashing sounds during courtship.

Reproduction & life cycle

Koi are egg-layers that reproduce in spring and early summer when water temperatures reach 18-25°C. Males pursue females in shallow, vegetated areas. A single female may produce 100,000 to over 400,000 eggs, which are scattered among aquatic plants or spawning mops in ponds. Eggs are adhesive and attach to substrate. Fertilized eggs hatch in 4-7 days depending on temperature. Fry are initially sustained by yolk sacs, then feed on microorganisms. Sexual maturity is reached at 3-5 years. Selective breeding programs carefully control parentage to maintain or develop desired traits.

When to look

Koi are visible year-round in ponds, most active in spring and summer. Breeding occurs in late spring to early summer (May-June in northern hemisphere). Activity decreases significantly in winter when water temperatures drop below 10°C.

Koi hold profound cultural significance in Japanese culture, symbolizing perseverance, strength, courage, and good fortune. They are central to Japanese garden design and feature prominently in art, tattoos, and folklore.
