How to identify
Megachile rotundata is a robust bee measuring 6-9 mm in length, with females being slightly larger than males. The body is generally dark gray to black with pale gray or white hair bands on the abdomen. Females have a distinctive pale yellow ventral pollen-carrying brush (scopa) on the underside of the abdomen, visible when collecting pollen. Males can be identified by their longer antennae and modified front legs with whitish hair tufts. The wings are smoky or clear, and the overall appearance is compact and cylindrical. The species lacks the bright metallic coloration of some other Megachile species.
Habitat
Leafcutter bees inhabit open areas including meadows, gardens, agricultural fields, forest edges, and urban environments. They require access to suitable nesting cavities such as hollow plant stems, beetle borings in wood, or cracks in structures, along with available leaf material from roses, lilacs, ashes, and other plants. They thrive in areas with abundant flowering plants, particularly legumes.
Distribution
Native to Europe and western Asia, Megachile rotundata has been introduced to North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand for agricultural pollination. In North America, it is now widespread across the United States and Canada, particularly in areas with alfalfa cultivation. The species has become naturalized in many introduced regions and can be found from sea level to moderate elevations.
Diet
Adult leafcutter bees feed on nectar from a variety of flowering plants for energy. Females collect pollen primarily from legumes (alfalfa, clover, vetch) but also visit other plant families, packing it on the ventral scopa. The pollen-nectar mixture stored in nest cells provides protein and nutrients for developing larvae. Behavior
Leafcutter bees are solitary, with each female independently constructing and provisioning her nest. Females cut semicircular pieces from leaves using their mandibles, carrying them to nest cavities where they fashion cylindrical cells. Each cell receives a ball of pollen and nectar, an egg is laid, and the cell is capped with circular leaf pieces. Bees are active during warm, sunny days and are non-aggressive, rarely stinging unless directly handled. Males emerge before females and patrol territories waiting for mates.
Reproduction & life cycle
Megachile rotundata is univoltine or bivoltine depending on climate, producing one to two generations per year. After mating, females begin nesting in early to mid-summer. A single female may construct multiple nests with 6-12 cells each over her 4-6 week adult lifespan. Eggs hatch within a few days, and larvae feed on the pollen provisions, passing through five instars before spinning a cocoon. Larvae typically overwinter as prepupae inside cocoons, pupating in spring. Adult bees emerge by chewing through leaf caps, with males emerging first.
When to look
Adults are active from late spring through late summer (June-August in northern temperate regions), with peak activity in mid-summer. Timing varies with latitude and climate. Overwintering occurs in the prepupal stage within cocoons.
