The chambered nautilus is a living fossil, a cephalopod mollusk with a distinctive spiraled external shell divided into gas-filled chambers. Found in the deep tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, it has survived relatively unchanged for hundreds of millions of years.

Nautilus pompilius, commonly known as the chambered nautilus, is a marine cephalopod mollusk that represents one of the oldest living lineages of shelled cephalopods, with fossil relatives dating back over 500 million years. Unlike its relatives the octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish, the nautilus retains a prominent external shell that is planispirally coiled and divided into camerae (chambers) separated by septa. The animal inhabits only the outermost chamber, while the others are filled with gas and fluid that the nautilus can adjust to control its buoyancy. The nautilus shell is renowned for its beautiful mother-of-pearl interior and exhibits a near-perfect logarithmic spiral, making it a subject of mathematical and aesthetic fascination. The animal itself possesses up to 90 cirri (tentacles without suckers), a relatively simple eye structure lacking a lens, and a primitive brain compared to other cephalopods. It navigates the deep reef slopes and walls of the Indo-Pacific using jet propulsion and chemical sensing. Nautilus pompilius is a slow-growing, long-lived species that reaches sexual maturity late in life. It is primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours in deep water (up to 600 meters) and ascending to shallower depths (as shallow as 100 meters) at night to forage. The species faces conservation concerns due to overharvesting for the shell trade, slow reproductive rates, and its limited geographic range. As a so-called "living fossil," the nautilus provides valuable insights into early cephalopod evolution and the ecology of ancient marine ecosystems. How to identify
The nautilus has a distinctive cream-colored shell with reddish-brown radial stripes, typically 15-25 cm in diameter when fully grown. The shell is smooth, tightly coiled in a flat spiral (planispiral), and shows a pearly iridescent interior when cut. The living animal has numerous (60-90) retractile tentacles without suckers, a leathery hood that can seal the shell aperture, and large eyes without lenses. The shell's cross-section reveals the characteristic chambers separated by curved walls (septa) with a central tube (siphuncle) running through them.
Habitat
Nautilus pompilius inhabits steep outer reef slopes, drop-offs, and deep coral reef walls in tropical Indo-Pacific waters. It prefers depths between 100 and 600 meters, typically resting in deeper waters during the day and migrating vertically to shallower depths at night to feed. The species favors areas with rocky substrates, caves, and crevices where it can shelter during daylight hours.
Distribution
Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Andaman Sea east to Fiji and Samoa, north to the Philippines and Palau, and south to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia and New Caledonia. Populations are patchy and localized around oceanic islands and deep reef systems.
Diet
Carnivorous scavenger and predator feeding primarily on crustaceans (hermit crabs, shrimp), fish, and carrion. Uses its tentacles to capture prey and a sharp parrot-like beak to break apart food. Hunts primarily by chemosensory detection, using smell to locate food in low-light deep-water environments. Can go for extended periods without food.
Behavior
Primarily nocturnal, undertaking daily vertical migrations from deep daytime refuges (300-600 m) to shallower feeding grounds (100-300 m) at night. Moves by jet propulsion, expelling water through a muscular siphon. Demonstrates negative phototaxis (avoidance of light) and uses chemical cues for navigation and prey detection. Capable of regulating buoyancy by adjusting the gas-to-liquid ratio in shell chambers through the siphuncle. Generally solitary but may aggregate in areas with abundant food or suitable habitat.
Reproduction & life cycle
Reaches sexual maturity slowly, at approximately 10-15 years of age. Males transfer spermatophores to females using specialized tentacles. Females lay large, yolky eggs individually, attaching them to hard substrates in deep water. Egg development takes 9-12 months, one of the longest incubation periods among cephalopods. Hatchlings emerge as miniature adults with shells of about 2-3 cm diameter. Reproduces only once or twice per year with small clutch sizes (approximately 10-20 eggs annually), contributing to vulnerability to overharvesting.
When to look
Active year-round with nightly vertical migrations. Nocturnal feeding activity occurs throughout the year, though reproductive activity may have seasonal peaks varying by location.
Cultural significance
The nautilus shell has been prized for centuries in art, jewelry, and decorative objects, particularly in the form of carved or polished shell cups. The shell's mathematical properties and perfect spiral have inspired artists, mathematicians, and architects. In literature, it appears in Oliver Wendell Holmes' poem 'The Chambered Nautilus' and Jules Verne's submarine in 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.' The shell trade remains a significant threat, with millions harvested historically. Some Pacific Island cultures traditionally used nautilus shells in ceremonies and as trade items.
