Ananas comosus is a tropical herbaceous perennial plant native to South America, cultivated worldwide for its edible composite fruit. The pineapple is one of the most economically important members of the bromeliad family and is grown commercially in tropical and subtropical regions globally.
Overview
The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a terrestrial bromeliad originating from the region between southern Brazil and Paraguay. How to identify

The plant is adapted to areas with annual rainfall of 600-2500 mm, though it is drought-tolerant due to its CAM photosynthesis. It grows best in full sun and warm temperatures between 20-30°C, with growth slowing below 15°C. Wild relatives are found in sunny, rocky areas and forest edges in South American grasslands and scrublands.

Diet
Requires well-drained, acidic soils rich in organic matter with good fertility. Benefits from regular applications of nitrogen, potassium, and iron. Full sun exposure (6-8 hours daily) is essential for optimal growth and fruit development. The plant is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture during fruit development. Excessive water or poorly drained soils can lead to root rot.
Behavior
Pineapple exhibits CAM photosynthesis, opening stomata at night to minimize water loss. The plant typically produces a single fruit per growing cycle, though commercial growers often induce secondary fruiting (ratoon crops) from side shoots after the main harvest. Growth follows distinct phases: vegetative (12-16 months), flowering induction (natural or artificial), and fruiting (5-6 months). The plant produces offsets (slips, suckers, and hapas) at various positions that can be used for vegetative propagation. Commercial cultivation often involves artificial induction of flowering using ethylene or acetylene to synchronize harvest.
Reproduction & life cycle
Pineapple reproduces both sexually (through seeds in wild types) and vegetatively. Modern commercial cultivars are typically self-incompatible and seedless, relying entirely on vegetative propagation through crowns, slips (shoots from the fruit stalk), suckers (shoots from the leaf axils), or hapas (shoots from underground stems). When flowers are pollinated (usually by hummingbirds in native habitat), small seeds develop in the fruit. The plant flowers once, producing a compound inflorescence of 100-200 individual purple or red flowers that open sequentially over several weeks. After fruiting, the main plant declines but produces vegetative offsets before dying.
When to look
In tropical regions, can fruit year-round depending on planting schedule. Natural flowering typically occurs in cooler, drier seasons. Commercial operations use artificial induction to control flowering and harvest timing. Main harvest seasons vary by region: December-February in Hawaii, March-June in Costa Rica, year-round in Philippines.

Pineapple has been a symbol of hospitality and welcome since colonial times, particularly in the Americas and Europe. Indigenous peoples used the fruit for food, fermented beverages, and medicinal purposes including digestive aid and anti-inflammatory treatments. The enzyme bromelain, extracted from pineapple, is used in meat tenderizers, dietary supplements, and medical applications. Piña fiber from leaves is woven into traditional Philippine barong tagalog shirts and other textiles. The fruit appears widely in art, architecture, and decorative motifs as a luxury symbol. In traditional medicine, various plant parts are used to treat bronchitis, digestive issues, and inflammation.
