The family name Dendrobatidae derives from the Greek words for 'tree walker,' though many species are terrestrial. Their toxicity varies considerably among species, with some being highly poisonous while others possess little to no toxin. The most toxic species include members of the genus Phyllobates, particularly the golden poison frog (Phyllobates terribilis). These amphibians do not synthesize their own toxins but rather sequester alkaloid compounds from their diet of ants, mites, and other small arthropods. Captive-bred individuals fed non-toxic prey lose their poisonous properties. Poison dart frogs exhibit complex social behaviors and parental care unusual among amphibians. Many species are diurnal, allowing their bright colors to be visible and effective as warning signals. They occupy various microhabitats within rainforests, from leaf litter on the forest floor to vegetation in the canopy. Their small size, typically ranging from 1.5 to 6 centimeters, and specific habitat requirements make them sensitive indicators of rainforest health. How to identify

Poison dart frogs are identified by their small size (typically 1.5-6 cm in length), smooth moist skin, and extraordinarily bright coloration. Species display patterns in vivid reds, blues, yellows, oranges, greens, and blacks, often in bold contrasting combinations or intricate patterns of spots and stripes. They have relatively large eyes positioned on the sides of their rounded heads, four toes on the front feet and five on the hind feet with expanded digital tips. Males are generally slightly smaller than females. Many species produce soft chirping, buzzing, or trilling calls, though vocalizations are quieter than those of many other frog families. The specific color pattern and arrangement is often diagnostic for species identification, though some species exhibit geographic color variation.

Habitat

Poison dart frogs inhabit tropical and subtropical rainforests, typically in areas with high humidity and consistent moisture. They occupy various microhabitats including leaf litter on the forest floor, low vegetation, moss-covered rocks, tree bark, and bromeliads in the canopy. Many species prefer areas near streams, seeps, or other water sources. They require access to small pools of water in leaf axils, fallen logs, or other phytotelmata for tadpole development. Different species show preferences for different forest strata, from ground-dwelling species to those that live primarily in the canopy.

Distribution

Poison dart frogs are found exclusively in the Neotropics, ranging from Nicaragua and Costa Rica in Central America through the Amazon Basin and into southeastern Brazil and Bolivia. The greatest species diversity occurs in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Different species have varying range sizes, with some restricted to very small geographic areas (making them endemic to specific regions or even single mountains), while others are more widely distributed. They occur from sea level to elevations exceeding 1,500 meters in some montane cloud forests.

Diet

Poison dart frogs are insectivorous, feeding primarily on small arthropods including ants, termites, mites, springtails, fruit flies, and other tiny invertebrates. Their diet is crucial to their toxicity, as they sequester alkaloid compounds from their prey, particularly from ants and mites. Different species may have dietary preferences based on their microhabitat and the arthropod fauna available. Tadpoles of most species feed on algae, detritus, and unfertilized eggs provided by the mother, though some species have carnivorous tadpoles that consume other tadpoles or eggs.

Behavior

Poison dart frogs are primarily diurnal, actively foraging during daylight hours when their bright colors serve as effective warning signals. They are generally territorial, with males defending territories through vocalizations and physical displays, sometimes engaging in wrestling matches with rivals. Many species exhibit complex parental care behaviors, with males calling to attract females, and one or both parents transporting tadpoles to water-filled locations. They are generally bold and can be observed moving openly on the forest floor or on vegetation. Some species show site fidelity, returning to the same locations regularly. Their activity levels are influenced by temperature and humidity, being most active during warm, humid conditions.

Reproduction & life cycle

Poison dart frogs display remarkable parental care among amphibians. Males typically establish and defend territories, using species-specific calls to attract females. Courtship involves tactile interactions and following behaviors. Females lay small clutches of 2-12 eggs on moist surfaces such as leaves, leaf litter, or in sheltered locations. One or both parents guard the eggs and keep them moist. After hatching (typically 10-18 days), the parent (usually the male in most species, but the female in some) transports tadpoles on their back to water-filled locations such as bromeliad pools, tree holes, or other phytotelmata. In some species, females deposit unfertilized trophic eggs to feed developing tadpoles. Tadpoles metamorphose after several weeks to months, depending on species and environmental conditions. Sexual maturity is typically reached at 1-2 years of age.

When to look

Active year-round in tropical rainforests, though breeding activity often peaks during rainy seasons when humidity is highest and water-filled microhabitats are most abundant. In some regions, breeding may coincide with specific seasonal patterns in rainfall.

Cultural significance

Indigenous peoples of western Colombia and Ecuador, particularly the Emberá and Noanamá, have historically used the toxic secretions of certain poison dart frog species (especially Phyllobates) to poison the tips of blow darts for hunting. The frogs are carefully handled with leaves, and darts are rubbed against the frog's back to collect the toxin. This practice has declined with modernization but remains part of cultural heritage. The frogs have become iconic symbols of rainforest biodiversity and are featured prominently in conservation messaging, education, and popular culture. Their striking appearance has made them popular in zoos and aquariums worldwide, helping raise awareness about amphibian conservation. Scientists study their toxins for potential pharmaceutical applications, including pain management research.
