Rainbow trout is a species of salmonid native to cold-water environments along the Pacific coast of North America and eastern Asia. Named for the distinctive pink to red stripe along their lateral line, these fish inhabit clear, cool streams, rivers, and lakes with high oxygen content. They are highly adaptable and have been introduced to suitable freshwater habitats on every continent except Antarctica, making them one of the world's most widely distributed fish species. Rainbow trout exhibit remarkable life history diversity, existing in both resident freshwater and anadromous (sea-run) forms. The anadromous form, known as steelhead, migrates to the ocean and returns to freshwater to spawn, growing significantly larger than their landlocked counterparts. This plasticity has contributed to their success in colonizing diverse aquatic environments and their popularity in recreational fisheries. As opportunistic feeders, rainbow trout occupy an important ecological role as both predators and prey in aquatic food webs. How to identify

Rainbow trout are fusiform (torpedo-shaped) fish with blue-green to olive backs, silvery sides, and white bellies. Adults display a distinctive pink to reddish horizontal stripe along the lateral line from gills to tail. The body, dorsal fin, and tail are covered with small black spots that extend below the lateral line. They have a blunt head, moderately forked tail, and adipose fin characteristic of salmonids. Body coloration can vary significantly based on habitat, diet, and life stage. Typical adult size ranges from 12-20 inches (30-50 cm), though steelhead can exceed 45 inches (114 cm). No distinctive calls, as fish lack vocal apparatus.

Habitat

Rainbow trout inhabit cold, well-oxygenated freshwater systems including streams, rivers, and lakes. They prefer water temperatures between 55-60°F (13-16°C) and require clear water with gravel or rocky substrates for spawning. Optimal habitats feature riffles, pools, overhanging vegetation for cover, and abundant aquatic insects. Steelhead migrate to marine environments, inhabiting coastal and pelagic zones of the Pacific Ocean before returning to natal streams to spawn.

Distribution

Native to Pacific drainages from Alaska to northern Mexico in North America, and the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Asia. Rainbow trout have been introduced extensively throughout North America outside their native range and to suitable cold-water habitats in South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia, establishing self-sustaining populations in many locations.

Diet

Rainbow trout are opportunistic carnivores feeding primarily on aquatic insects (mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, midges), terrestrial insects, crustaceans, mollusks, fish eggs, and small fish. Larger individuals consume more fish. Steelhead in marine environments feed on squid, amphipods, and various fish species. Diet varies seasonally and with available prey abundance.

Behavior

Rainbow trout are primarily diurnal, actively feeding during daylight hours with peak activity at dawn and dusk. They are territorial, especially when feeding, defending prime feeding positions in streams. They exhibit station-holding behavior in current, conserving energy while watching for drifting prey. Juveniles often school for protection while adults are more solitary. Steelhead demonstrate complex migratory behavior, with timing and duration of ocean residence varying among populations.

Reproduction & life cycle

Rainbow trout typically spawn in spring (March-June) when water temperatures reach 45-55°F (7-13°C). Females excavate nests (redds) in gravel substrates using their tails, depositing 200-12,000 eggs depending on body size. Males fertilize eggs externally, and females cover the redd with gravel. Eggs incubate for 3-4 weeks. Young fish (fry) emerge from gravel after absorbing their yolk sacs. Sexual maturity is reached at 2-3 years. Unlike Pacific salmon, rainbow trout are iteroparous and may spawn multiple times, though steelhead experience high post-spawning mortality.

Spawning season typically spring (March-June). Best fishing opportunities vary by location but generally spring through fall. Steelhead runs occur in winter-spring or summer-fall depending on population. Year-round presence in most established habitats.
