Overview
The coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is an evergreen coniferous tree endemic to the coastal regions of northern California and southern Oregon. These magnificent trees are renowned for their extraordinary height, with the tallest known specimen, named Hyperion, measuring 115.9 meters (380.3 feet). Redwoods thrive in the unique microclimate created by coastal fog, which provides essential moisture during dry summers and reduces water stress. Redwoods possess thick, fibrous bark that can reach 30 centimeters in thickness and contains high levels of tannins, making it highly resistant to fire, insects, and fungal decay. This adaptation has allowed individual trees and groves to survive for millennia. The trees have a remarkable ability to regenerate through both seed germination and vegetative sprouting from burls at the base of damaged or cut trees, creating characteristic fairy rings of genetically identical clones surrounding old stumps. These trees play a crucial ecological role as foundational species in coastal temperate rainforests, supporting diverse communities of plants, animals, and fungi. Their massive canopies create multiple vertical habitats, hosting species found nowhere else, including the wandering salamander and marbled murrelet. Redwood forests are also among the most productive ecosystems on Earth in terms of biomass accumulation. Historically, old-growth redwood forests covered approximately 810,000 hectares, but intensive logging from the 1850s through the 1970s reduced this to less than 5% of the original extent. Today, remaining old-growth stands are primarily protected in state and national parks, while second-growth forests continue to recover on previously logged lands.
How to identify
Coast redwoods are identified by their towering straight trunks with reddish-brown, deeply furrowed fibrous bark. Needles are arranged in flat sprays with two types: scale-like needles on fertile shoots and longer, flat, linear needles (15-25 mm) arranged in two ranks on sterile shoots. Foliage is deep green above and marked with two white stomatal bands beneath. Cones are small and oval (15-32 mm long), maturing in one season from green to reddish-brown. Mature trees have a distinctive buttressed base and often lack lower branches, with foliage concentrated in the upper crown.
Habitat
Coast redwoods grow exclusively in the fog belt within 50 kilometers of the Pacific Ocean, typically at elevations below 750 meters. They require cool, humid conditions with frequent summer fog, mild wet winters, and well-drained, deep alluvial soils. These trees are often found in canyon bottoms, floodplains, and lower slopes where soil moisture remains high throughout the year.
Distribution
Endemic to a narrow coastal strip extending approximately 750 kilometers from extreme southwestern Oregon (Curry County) south through coastal northern California to southern Monterey County. The natural range rarely extends more than 50 kilometers inland and encompasses portions of the California Coast Ranges.
Diet
Redwoods require deep, well-drained acidic to neutral soils rich in organic matter. They need consistent moisture year-round, with water uptake supplemented significantly by fog drip captured by their foliage. Trees require full to partial sunlight, though seedlings tolerate shade. They absorb nutrients primarily through extensive shallow root systems that spread laterally up to 30 meters but rarely exceed 4 meters in depth.
Behavior
Coast redwoods exhibit remarkable sprouting ability from dormant buds in burls at the tree base, allowing regeneration after fire, flood, or logging. Trees can live for over 2,000 years, growing rapidly in youth (up to 2 meters per year) and continuing to add biomass even in old age. They develop massive root networks that intertwine with neighboring trees, providing mutual structural support. Redwoods efficiently capture fog moisture through foliar uptake, with up to 40% of annual water needs met by fog drip.
Reproduction & life cycle
Redwoods are monoecious, producing both male and female cones on the same tree. Male cones release pollen in late winter, fertilizing female cones that mature by autumn of the same year. Each small cone contains 3-7 seeds, with only 10-20% viable. Seeds require bare mineral soil and full light for germination. Sexual reproduction is supplemented extensively by vegetative sprouting from root crowns and burls, which can produce genetically identical clones that survive for thousands of years across multiple tree generations.
When to look
Redwoods are evergreen and can be observed year-round. New growth emerges in spring (March-May), pollen is released in late winter to early spring (February-March), and cones mature in autumn (September-October). The trees are most impressive when coastal fog is prevalent during summer months (June-September).
Cultural significance
Coast redwoods hold deep significance for indigenous peoples of the region, including the Yurok, Tolowa, and Pomo, who used the rot-resistant wood for canoes, houses, and ceremonial objects. The trees' fire resistance and straight grain made them highly prized for lumber, leading to the "redwood rush" of the 19th and 20th centuries. Redwoods have become iconic symbols of conservation, with efforts to protect them helping establish California's state park system. They are celebrated as living monuments to ancient forests and feature prominently in environmental education and ecotourism.
