Ganoderma lingzhi, commonly known as reishi or lingzhi, is a polypore mushroom with a distinctive reddish-brown, kidney-shaped cap and shiny varnished appearance. It has been used in traditional East Asian medicine for over two millennia and grows on hardwood trees in temperate and subtropical forests.

The fruiting bodies develop slowly over several months, forming tough, woody structures that persist for extended periods. The shiny, resinous coating on the cap surface is a distinctive feature that gives rise to its common names including 'varnish shelf' and 'lacquered bracket.' Reishi has been revered in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese traditional medicine systems for centuries, where it is considered a tonic for longevity and vitality. How to identify
The fruiting body is a large, woody, kidney to fan-shaped bracket typically 5-30 cm in diameter with a lateral or posterior stalk. The cap surface is distinctively shiny and lacquered, displaying concentric zones of red-brown, orange-brown, to purple-brown coloration with a lighter, often yellowish growing margin. The underside features a white to cream-colored pore surface with 4-5 tiny circular pores per millimeter. The tough, corky flesh is brown to rust-colored. The stalk, when present, is lateral, varnished, and shares the cap's dark reddish-brown color. Spore print is brown.
Habitat
Grows on stumps, logs, and at the base of living or dead hardwood trees, particularly oaks and other deciduous species. Prefers warm temperate and subtropical broadleaf forests with adequate moisture. Found from lowland forests to mountainous regions up to moderate elevations.
Distribution
Native to East Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia. The species has a more restricted range than previously thought due to taxonomic revisions separating it from morphologically similar Ganoderma species in other regions. Most widely distributed in temperate and subtropical zones of Asia.

As a wood-decay fungus, Ganoderma lingzhi obtains nutrients by decomposing lignin and cellulose in hardwood substrates. Reproduction & life cycle
Reproduces via basidiospores produced in the pore layer on the underside of the fruiting body. Billions of brown, oval spores (measuring approximately 8-12 × 5-8 micrometers) are released continuously during the growing season and dispersed by wind. Spores germinate on suitable wood substrates, and the resulting mycelium colonizes the wood interior. The fungus is heterothallic, requiring compatible mating types to form dikaryotic mycelium capable of producing fruiting bodies. Fruiting bodies may persist and continue growth for several years.
When to look
Fruiting bodies typically emerge in late spring through summer (May-August in northern hemisphere), with spore production continuing through autumn. Perennial brackets persist year-round but show active growth margins during warm, humid months.
