Salmon are anadromous fish belonging to the genera Oncorhynchus (Pacific salmon) and Salmo (Atlantic salmon) in the family Salmonidae. They are renowned for their epic migrations from ocean feeding grounds to freshwater rivers where they spawn.
Overview
Salmon are iconic fish found in the Northern Hemisphere, comprising several species split between two primary genera: Oncorhynchus (Pacific salmon, including Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum) and Salmo (Atlantic salmon). These highly migratory fish spend most of their adult lives in the ocean but return to freshwater rivers and streams to reproduce, a behavior known as anadromy. Salmon possess streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies adapted for powerful swimming against strong currents. Their coloration changes dramatically throughout their life cycle: silver in the ocean phase, transforming to vibrant reds, greens, or browns during spawning. This transformation, particularly pronounced in Pacific salmon, includes physical changes such as hooked jaws (kypes) in males and humped backs in some species. These fish play critical ecological roles as keystone species, transferring marine nutrients to freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. Their carcasses after spawning provide essential nutrients for river systems, forests, and countless species including bears, eagles, and invertebrates. Salmon populations face numerous threats including habitat loss, overfishing, pollution, climate change, and barriers to migration such as dams. Salmon have immense commercial, recreational, and cultural importance worldwide. They support major fisheries in the North Pacific and North Atlantic, sustain indigenous communities who have depended on salmon runs for millennia, and are widely farmed in aquaculture operations globally.
How to identify
Adult salmon typically measure 50-100 cm in length depending on species, with streamlined bodies, forked tails, and small scales. Ocean-phase salmon are silver with dark backs and few or no spots. Spawning adults undergo dramatic transformation: Pacific salmon develop hooked jaws (kypes), particularly in males, and vivid coloration ranging from bright red (Sockeye) to dark green with red stripes (Chum). Atlantic salmon retain silvery coloration longer but develop spots and darker hues. Key identification features include adipose fin (small fleshy fin between dorsal fin and tail), number and placement of spots, and jaw structure. Young salmon (parr) display dark vertical bars called parr marks on their sides.
Habitat
Salmon require both freshwater and marine habitats. Spawning and juvenile rearing occur in cold, clean, well-oxygenated rivers and streams with gravel substrates. Adults migrate to the ocean where they feed in coastal and pelagic waters. Preferred spawning habitat includes riffle areas with suitable gravel size for nest construction (redds), adequate water flow, and temperatures typically below 15°C. Some populations utilize lakes for rearing. Habitat requirements include unobstructed migration corridors between ocean and spawning grounds.
Distribution
Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus) range throughout the North Pacific Ocean and associated river systems from California to Alaska, across to Japan, Korea, and Russia. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) historically ranged throughout the North Atlantic, from rivers in northeastern North America and Greenland to Europe from Portugal to Russia. Pacific salmon have been introduced to the Great Lakes and other regions. Natural distribution has contracted in many areas due to habitat loss and other anthropogenic pressures.
Diet
Salmon are carnivorous throughout their lives. Juvenile salmon (fry and parr) in freshwater consume aquatic insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and small crustaceans. Ocean-phase salmon feed on krill, amphipods, small fish (herring, sardines, anchovies), and squid. Feeding intensity varies by species and life stage, with most Pacific salmon ceasing to feed entirely once they enter freshwater for spawning migration, relying instead on stored energy reserves.
Behavior
Salmon exhibit remarkable homing behavior, returning with extraordinary precision to their natal streams to spawn, likely using a combination of chemical cues (olfaction), magnetic field detection, and celestial navigation. Pacific salmon are semelparous, dying after a single spawning event, while Atlantic salmon are iteroparous and may spawn multiple times. During spawning, females excavate nests (redds) in gravel using their tails, while males compete aggressively for mating opportunities. Migration timing varies by species and population, with runs occurring throughout the year in different systems. Salmon display schooling behavior in the ocean and remarkable endurance during upstream migration, jumping waterfalls and navigating obstacles.
Reproduction & life cycle
Salmon reproduction involves an arduous migration from ocean to freshwater spawning grounds. Females use their tails to dig redds (nests) in gravel substrates, depositing 2,000-5,000 eggs depending on species and body size. Males compete for access to females, and dominant males fertilize eggs externally as they are deposited. Females cover eggs with gravel after fertilization. Eggs incubate in gravel for weeks to months depending on water temperature. Newly hatched alevins remain in gravel, absorbing yolk sacs, then emerge as fry. Young salmon may spend days to several years in freshwater (varying by species) before undergoing smoltification, a physiological transformation allowing ocean entry. Ocean residence ranges from 1-7 years before adults return to spawn.
When to look
Spawning runs occur year-round depending on species, population, and location. Spring and fall are peak migration periods for many populations. In rivers, look for salmon from late summer through fall in most temperate regions. Ocean fishing seasons vary by region and management regulations. Juvenile salmon emerge in spring.
Cultural significance
Salmon hold profound cultural and spiritual significance for indigenous peoples throughout their range, particularly Pacific Northwest tribes and First Nations who have depended on salmon for food, ceremony, and cultural identity for thousands of years. Salmon feature prominently in indigenous art, stories, and traditional ecological knowledge. They remain central to ceremonial first salmon celebrations. Economically, salmon support commercial fisheries worth billions of dollars, recreational fishing industries, and major aquaculture operations. Salmon are culturally important in European traditions and cuisine, particularly in Scandinavia, Scotland, and Ireland. The fish symbolizes determination, transformation, and life cycles in various cultures.
