How to identify

Female catkins appear in spring, are smaller and greenish, and develop on the same twigs as leaves. After wind pollination, female catkins mature into brown, cylindrical structures containing numerous tiny winged seeds (samaras). Seeds ripen from late summer through autumn and are dispersed by wind over long distances. A mature tree can produce millions of seeds annually. Seeds require bare mineral soil or disturbed ground for successful germination. Trees typically begin producing seed at 10-15 years of age. Vegetative reproduction through root suckers occurs occasionally.
When to look
Best observed in early spring (March-April) when male catkins release pollen before leaves emerge, and in autumn (September-October) when foliage turns golden-yellow. The distinctive white bark is visible year-round and is particularly striking in winter against snow. Seeds disperse from late summer through autumn.

Silver Birch holds significant cultural importance across northern Europe, featuring prominently in folklore, mythology, and traditional medicine.
