Sorghum
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is a robust cereal grain native to Africa and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is the fifth most important cereal crop globally, valued for its drought tolerance and versatility as food, fodder, and biofuel.
Overview
Sorghum bicolor is an annual grass species domesticated in northeastern Africa approximately 5,000 years ago. It has become a staple crop across Africa, Asia, and the Americas due to its remarkable ability to withstand drought, heat, and poor soil conditions better than most other cereals. The plant produces grain-bearing panicles that can be white, yellow, red, or bronze in color. As a C4 photosynthesis plant, sorghum exhibits exceptional water-use efficiency, requiring significantly less water than corn or wheat. This makes it particularly valuable in semi-arid regions and increasingly important in the context of climate change. The crop has multiple uses: grain for human consumption and animal feed, sweet sorghum varieties for syrup and ethanol production, and biomass sorghum for forage and bioenergy. Sorghum has been bred into numerous cultivars adapted to different climates and purposes, including grain sorghum, forage sorghum, sweet sorghum, and broomcorn. Modern breeding programs continue to develop varieties with improved yields, disease resistance, and nutritional profiles. The crop plays a crucial role in food security for millions of people, particularly in Africa and South Asia, where it thrives in conditions too harsh for other cereals.
How to identify
Sorghum is a tall annual grass reaching 0.6 to 4 meters in height depending on variety. The stems are solid and erect, with a waxy coating that helps reduce water loss. Leaves are long, linear, and alternately arranged along the stem, typically 5-10 cm wide and up to 80 cm long with a prominent white midrib. The inflorescence is a dense panicle 15-50 cm long at the top of the stem, ranging from tight and compact to loose and spreading. Seeds are round to oval, 4-8 mm in diameter, and vary in color from white and yellow to red, brown, and black. The root system is extensive and fibrous, contributing to the plant's drought tolerance.
Habitat
Sorghum thrives in warm climates with full sun exposure, typically in open agricultural fields and cultivated lands. It grows best in well-drained soils but tolerates a wide range of soil types including sandy, clay, and alkaline soils. The crop performs well in semi-arid regions with annual rainfall between 400-600 mm, though it can be cultivated with as little as 250 mm or with irrigation in drier areas.
Distribution
Originally native to northeastern Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Sudan, sorghum is now cultivated globally across tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions. Major production areas include the United States (primarily Great Plains), India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Mexico, China, Argentina, and Australia. It grows between approximately 40°N and 40°S latitude, from sea level to elevations of 2,400 meters.
Diet
Sorghum requires full sun exposure (at least 6-8 hours daily) and warm temperatures for optimal growth, with ideal germination at soil temperatures of 15-18°C. The crop is adapted to a wide pH range (5.5-8.5) but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils. It has moderate nitrogen requirements and benefits from phosphorus and potassium fertilization, though it is more efficient at nutrient uptake than many other cereals. Sorghum's extensive root system allows it to access water and nutrients from deeper soil layers.
Behavior
Sorghum exhibits rapid initial growth once temperatures are favorable, establishing a deep root system early in development. The plant demonstrates remarkable drought tolerance through several mechanisms: waxy leaf coating reduces transpiration, leaves can roll to minimize water loss, and growth pauses during severe drought then resumes when conditions improve. Some varieties produce cyanogenic glycosides as a defense against herbivores, particularly under stress conditions. The plant typically reaches maturity 90-120 days after planting depending on variety and environmental conditions.
Reproduction & life cycle
Sorghum is primarily self-pollinating, though some cross-pollination can occur via wind. The plant flowers 60-90 days after planting, with the panicle emerging from the boot (flag leaf sheath) and flowering progressing from top to bottom over 7-10 days. Each panicle contains hundreds to thousands of flowers. After pollination, seeds develop and mature over 30-45 days. Seeds can remain viable for several years when stored properly under cool, dry conditions. While cultivated as an annual, sorghum can ratoon (regrow from the base) after harvest in favorable conditions, producing a second, smaller crop.
When to look
Planted in spring after last frost when soil temperatures reach 15°C, typically April-June in temperate regions and with monsoon rains in tropical areas. Harvest occurs in late summer to fall, approximately 90-120 days after planting, usually August-November in the Northern Hemisphere.
Cultural significance
Sorghum has been a dietary staple in Africa and India for millennia, used to make porridge, flatbreads (including injera in Ethiopia and roti in India), couscous, and fermented beverages. In the United States, sweet sorghum syrup was historically an important sweetener. The crop is naturally gluten-free, making it valuable for celiac disease sufferers. Traditional medicine uses sorghum for various purposes including treatment of digestive issues. Broomcorn varieties have been used for centuries to make brooms and brushes. The crop holds spiritual significance in some African cultures and features in harvest festivals and ceremonies.
