Overview

Soybean (Glycine max) is an herbaceous annual plant belonging to the legume family Fabaceae. Domesticated in China approximately 5,000 years ago from its wild progenitor Glycine soja, it has become one of the most economically significant crops globally. The plant typically grows as an erect bushy annual reaching 0.5 to 1.5 meters in height, with trifoliate leaves and small white or purple flowers. Soybeans are valued for their exceptionally high protein content (approximately 40%) and oil content (approximately 20%), making them a crucial source of plant-based protein for human consumption and livestock feed. The crop also plays an important ecological role through nitrogen fixation, where symbiotic Bradyrhizobium bacteria in root nodules convert atmospheric nitrogen into plant-available forms, enriching soil fertility. Today, soybeans are grown on over 120 million hectares worldwide, with major production centers in the United States, Brazil, Argentina, China, and India. The crop thrives in temperate and subtropical climates with warm growing seasons. Modern soybean cultivation involves various cultivars adapted to different latitudes and photoperiod requirements. Soybeans are processed into numerous products including soy milk, tofu, tempeh, soy sauce, edible oils, biodiesel, and industrial materials. How to identify

Soybean plants are erect, branching annuals growing 0.5 to 1.5 meters tall with hairy stems. Leaves are alternate and trifoliate (composed of three leaflets), with each leaflet being ovate to lanceolate, 6-15 cm long, with entire margins. Flowers are small (5-6 mm), papilionaceous (butterfly-shaped), and typically white, pink, or purple, arranged in axillary racemes. Seed pods are straight or slightly curved, 3-8 cm long, hairy, and contain 2-4 seeds. Seeds are spherical to oval, 5-11 mm in diameter, and vary in color from yellow, green, brown, black, or bicolored depending on variety.

Habitat

Soybeans require well-drained, fertile soils with pH between 6.0 and 7.0, though they tolerate a range of soil types. They grow best in warm climates with temperatures between 20-30°C during the growing season and require full sun exposure. The crop needs adequate moisture, particularly during flowering and pod-filling stages, with total water requirements of 450-700 mm depending on climate and variety.

Distribution

Native to East Asia, particularly China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan. Currently cultivated worldwide in temperate and subtropical regions between approximately 50°N and 35°S latitude. Major producing countries include the United States (Midwest), Brazil (central and southern regions), Argentina (Pampas), China (northeastern provinces), India, Paraguay, and Canada.

Diet

As a legume, soybeans form symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing Bradyrhizobium bacteria in root nodules, reducing dependence on nitrogen fertilizers. Plants require phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and micronutrients including iron, manganese, zinc, and molybdenum for optimal growth. They perform best in full sun (minimum 6-8 hours daily) and require consistent soil moisture, particularly during reproductive stages.

Behavior

Soybeans are photoperiod-sensitive short-day plants, with flowering triggered by night length exceeding a critical duration. Growth habit varies from determinate (bushy, limited height) to indeterminate (continued vegetative growth during flowering). Plants exhibit nyctinastic leaf movement, with leaflets folding at night and opening during day. Root systems can extend 1.5-2 meters deep. Modern cultivars are bred for specific maturity groups (000 to X) adapted to different latitudes and growing season lengths.

Reproduction & life cycle

Soybeans are predominantly self-pollinating with less than 1% natural cross-pollination. Flowering begins 3-6 weeks after emergence depending on cultivar and photoperiod. Flowers develop into hairy pods over 4-6 weeks, with seeds maturing 100-150 days after planting depending on maturity group. Each plant produces 15-80 pods. Seeds undergo physiological maturity when reaching maximum dry weight, followed by a drying-down period before harvest. Seeds can remain viable for 1-3 years under proper storage conditions.

When to look

Planted in spring (April-June in Northern Hemisphere) after last frost when soil temperatures reach 10-15°C. Flowers appear in mid-summer (June-August). Harvest occurs in autumn (September-November) when pods dry and leaves drop. In tropical regions with year-round warm temperatures, multiple cropping seasons possible.

Cultural significance

Soybeans have been central to East Asian cuisine and culture for millennia, featured in staples like tofu, miso, natto, and soy sauce. In traditional Chinese medicine, soybeans are considered beneficial for circulation and digestive health. The crop played a crucial role in ancient agricultural systems through nitrogen fixation. Today, soybeans are culturally significant as a symbol of sustainable agriculture and plant-based protein alternatives, though large-scale monoculture production raises environmental concerns regarding deforestation, particularly in South America.
