Overview
The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is an iconic marine mammal and the largest of the odontocetes (toothed whales). Adult males can reach lengths of 16-20 meters and weigh up to 57 tonnes, while females are smaller at 11-13 meters. The species is immediately recognizable by its enormous, box-like head, which comprises up to one-third of its total body length and houses the largest brain of any animal on Earth, as well as the spermaceti organ—a waxy substance historically prized by whalers. Sperm whales are among the deepest-diving mammals, regularly descending to depths of 400-1,200 meters and capable of reaching over 2,000 meters in pursuit of their primary prey, deep-sea squid. These extended dives can last 45-90 minutes, followed by surfacing periods where the whale breathes and recovers. Their distinctive blow is angled forward and to the left due to the asymmetrical positioning of the single blowhole on the left front of the head. Historically, sperm whales were heavily exploited during commercial whaling operations from the 18th through mid-20th centuries, driven by demand for spermaceti oil, ambergris, and other products. Populations were severely depleted before international protection was established. Today, sperm whales face threats from ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, ocean noise pollution, and ingestion of marine debris, particularly plastics. Sperm whales exhibit complex social structures, with females and young forming stable matrilineal groups while adult males are more solitary, joining female groups only for breeding. They are highly vocal animals, producing distinctive patterns of clicks used for echolocation and communication, with each whale possessing an individually recognizable click pattern or 'coda.'
How to identify
Sperm whales are identified by their massive, square-shaped head with a single blowhole positioned on the front left, producing a distinctive forward-angled blow. The skin is dark gray to brownish, often appearing wrinkled, with a dorsal hump followed by knuckles along the spine rather than a true dorsal fin. The lower jaw is narrow and underslung with 20-26 pairs of large conical teeth. At the surface, the broad, flat head and lack of a prominent dorsal fin distinguish them from other large whales. Body length reaches 11-13 meters in females and 16-20 meters in males. Vocalizations consist of loud, rhythmic clicks audible underwater and sometimes from the surface.
Habitat
Sperm whales inhabit deep oceanic waters worldwide, typically in areas deeper than 1,000 meters where the continental shelf drops off. They prefer waters over submarine canyons and along continental margins where deep-sea squid populations are abundant. While they occur in all oceans from the equator to polar regions, females and juveniles tend to remain in tropical and temperate waters year-round, while adult males venture into higher latitudes and colder waters, particularly during feeding seasons.
Distribution
Sperm whales have a cosmopolitan distribution, occurring in all of the world's oceans from equatorial to polar waters. They are found in both hemispheres, though distribution patterns differ by sex and age. Adult males range from the tropics to the edges of polar pack ice, while female groups and juveniles typically remain between 40°N and 40°S latitude. They are generally absent from shallow coastal waters and prefer deep oceanic habitats. Populations are found in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans.
Diet
Sperm whales are specialized predators of medium to large deep-sea squid, which comprise the bulk of their diet. Primary prey includes giant squid (Architeuthis species) and colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), along with numerous other squid species. They also consume deep-sea fish including rattails, rockfish, and sharks. Adult males may consume 3% of their body weight daily (roughly 900 kg), hunting primarily in deep waters between 400-2,000 meters depth. They use echolocation to locate prey in complete darkness and likely employ suction feeding to capture squid.
Behavior
Sperm whales are deep-diving specialists, regularly performing foraging dives lasting 45-90 minutes to depths of 400-1,200 meters, with recorded depths exceeding 2,000 meters. Between dives, they spend 8-10 minutes at the surface breathing and recovering. They exhibit complex social organization with females and juveniles living in stable matrilineal groups of 10-20 individuals, while adult males are largely solitary or form loose bachelor groups. Communication involves sophisticated click patterns called codas that vary between social groups and may represent cultural dialects. They are generally slow swimmers (5-10 km/h) but can accelerate when necessary.
Reproduction & life cycle
Female sperm whales reach sexual maturity at 7-13 years of age, while males mature later at 18-21 years but may not breed until their late twenties when large enough to compete for access to females. Breeding is polygynous, with mature males traveling between female groups. Gestation lasts approximately 14-16 months, resulting in a single calf about 4 meters long and weighing around 1,000 kg. Calves nurse for 2-3 years or longer and remain dependent on their mothers for several more years. Females give birth every 3-6 years. Interbirth intervals and extended parental care result in slow population growth rates.
When to look
Sperm whales can be observed year-round in deep oceanic waters, though seasonal patterns vary by region and sex. Adult males migrate between high-latitude feeding grounds in summer and lower-latitude breeding areas in winter. Female groups remain in tropical and temperate waters throughout the year. Peak sightings in many temperate regions occur during spring and summer months (April-September in Northern Hemisphere, November-March in Southern Hemisphere) when males move toward breeding areas or when oceanographic conditions concentrate prey.
Cultural significance
Sperm whales hold immense cultural significance, immortalized in Herman Melville's 1851 novel 'Moby-Dick,' which shaped Western perceptions of whales as powerful, mysterious creatures. They were central to the global whaling industry from the 1700s through the 1900s, with spermaceti oil used for lamps, lubricants, and candles, while ambergris—a waxy substance produced in their digestive systems—was prized for perfumery. Many coastal communities historically depended on sperm whaling for economic survival. In various Pacific Island cultures, sperm whales feature in creation stories and spiritual beliefs. Their teeth (ivory) were carved into scrimshaw art by whalers and traded among indigenous peoples. Today, they are flagship species for marine conservation and whale-watching ecotourism.
