The garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is a herbaceous perennial plant that produces one of the world's most popular fruits. This hybrid species arose in Brittany, France, around 1750 from an accidental cross between the large-fruited Chilean strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) and the North American Virginia strawberry (Fragaria virginiana). Unlike true berries, the strawberry fruit is actually an enlarged receptacle (accessory fruit) bearing numerous tiny seeds (achenes) on its surface. Strawberry plants grow as low rosettes with trifoliate leaves on long petioles emerging from a central crown. The plants spread through above-ground stolons (runners) that root at nodes to form daughter plants. White or pale pink flowers with five petals appear on stems that rise above the foliage. Modern cultivars have been extensively bred for improved fruit size, flavor, disease resistance, and adaptability to different climates and growing systems. Strawberries thrive in temperate climates worldwide and are grown commercially on every continent except Antarctica. They are cultivated in diverse systems from open fields to high-tech vertical farms. The fruit is consumed fresh, frozen, or processed into jams, juices, and desserts. Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, manganese, folate, and various antioxidants, making them nutritionally significant as well as economically important.

How to identify

Strawberry plants are low-growing herbaceous perennials typically 15-30 cm tall with trifoliate leaves (three leaflets per leaf). Leaflets are oval to obovate, bright to dark green, with serrated margins and prominent veins. The flowers are white or pale pink, 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter, with five rounded petals and numerous yellow stamens in the center. The distinctive fruit is bright red when ripe (though some cultivars may be white or pink), conical to heart-shaped, 2-5 cm long, with a characteristic pattern of tiny yellow or brown seeds (achenes) embedded in small pits across the surface. A crown of green sepals and leaves (calyx) remains attached at the top of the fruit.

Habitat

Strawberries are cultivated plants that require well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5) rich in organic matter. They prefer full sun exposure (at least 6-8 hours daily) and consistent moisture without waterlogging. Plants are grown in fields, raised beds, containers, greenhouses, and indoor vertical farming systems. Wild strawberry relatives typically inhabit woodland edges, meadows, and disturbed areas in temperate regions.

Distribution

Fragaria × ananassa is cultivated worldwide in temperate and subtropical regions. Major production areas include the United States (especially California and Florida), Mexico, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, South Korea, Poland, Germany, Russia, and Japan. The species does not occur naturally in the wild, as it is an artificial hybrid. Commercial cultivation extends from approximately 60°N to 40°S latitude, with production adapted to local climates through cultivar selection and growing techniques.

Diet

Strawberries require fertile, well-drained soil with high organic matter content and a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. They need regular watering, particularly during fruit development, with approximately 25-30 mm of water per week. Plants benefit from balanced fertilization, typically with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, though excessive nitrogen can reduce fruit production and increase disease susceptibility. Full sun exposure (6-8 hours daily minimum) is essential for optimal fruit production and sugar development.

Behavior

Strawberry plants exhibit determinate and indeterminate growth patterns depending on the cultivar type. June-bearing varieties produce a single large crop in late spring or early summer, while everbearing and day-neutral types produce fruit continuously or in multiple flushes throughout the growing season. Plants reproduce vegetatively through stolons (runners) that extend from the crown and root at nodes to form genetically identical daughter plants. The crown remains at or just above soil level and produces new leaves and flower stems throughout the growing season. Plants enter dormancy in winter in temperate climates, with survival dependent on adequate cold hardiness.

Reproduction & life cycle

Strawberries reproduce both sexually through seeds and asexually through vegetative stolons. Flowers are typically perfect (containing both male and female parts) and are pollinated by bees and other insects, though wind and self-pollination can also occur. After successful pollination, the receptacle swells and develops into the fleshy fruit over 4-6 weeks. Each fruit contains numerous viable achenes (seeds) on its surface. Commercially, strawberries are propagated vegetatively from runners to maintain cultivar characteristics. Runner plants develop from buds on stolons and can be separated and replanted after rooting. Plants typically remain productive for 3-5 years before requiring replacement.

When to look

Flowers appear in spring (April-May in Northern Hemisphere). June-bearing varieties fruit in late spring to early summer (May-June), while everbearing and day-neutral types produce from late spring through fall (May-October). Best planting times are early spring or late summer/early fall. Fruit is typically harvested every 2-3 days during peak season.
