Camellia sinensis is an evergreen shrub native to East Asia, cultivated worldwide for its leaves, which are processed to produce tea. It is one of the most economically important crop plants, with tea being the second-most consumed beverage globally after water.

Camellia sinensis is a perennial evergreen plant in the family Theaceae, grown primarily for its young leaves and leaf buds used to produce tea. The plant exists in two main varieties: var. sinensis (Chinese tea), a small-leafed bush native to China, and var. assamica (Assam tea), a larger-leafed tree form native to the Assam region of India. The species has been cultivated for thousands of years, with historical records of tea consumption in China dating back to the 3rd century CE. In the wild, tea plants can grow into small trees reaching 5-15 meters in height, but cultivated plants are typically pruned to waist height (1-1.5 meters) to facilitate harvesting. The plant thrives in tropical and subtropical climates with well-distributed rainfall and acidic soils. Tea cultivation has spread from its native range to many countries across Asia, Africa, and South America, with China, India, Kenya, and Sri Lanka being major producers. The chemistry of tea is complex, with leaves containing polyphenols, caffeine, amino acids, and volatile compounds that contribute to flavor and health benefits. Different processing methods—including oxidation levels, rolling, and drying—produce the various types of tea: white, green, oolong, black, and pu-erh. The plant's leaves are harvested year-round in tropical regions, with quality varying by season and the age of the leaves picked. Tea cultivation is labor-intensive, with fine teas often requiring hand-plucking of only the newest growth (the terminal bud and two youngest leaves). The industry supports millions of workers worldwide, particularly in developing countries, though it faces challenges related to labor practices, climate change impacts, and sustainable farming methods.
How to identify
Tea plants are evergreen shrubs or small trees with dark green, glossy, leathery leaves that are elliptical to oblong-lanceolate, 4-15 cm long, with serrated margins. The leaves are arranged alternately on branches. Flowers are white to pale pink, fragrant, 2.5-4 cm in diameter, with 5-7 petals and numerous yellow stamens, appearing singly or in small clusters in leaf axils. Fruits are flattened, round capsules containing 1-3 seeds. Var. sinensis has smaller leaves and a more bushy habit, while var. assamica has larger leaves and grows as a tree.
Habitat
Tea grows naturally in forests and forest margins in mountainous regions with high rainfall, acidic soils (pH 4.5-5.5), and good drainage. Cultivated tea thrives in tropical and subtropical climates at elevations from sea level to 2,000+ meters, with optimal growth at 1,200-1,800 meters in regions with 1,500-2,500 mm annual rainfall and temperatures between 10-30°C.
Distribution
Native to the border regions of northeastern India (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland), northern Myanmar, southwestern China (Yunnan province), and adjacent areas of mainland Southeast Asia. Cultivated extensively in China, India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Vietnam, Turkey, Indonesia, Japan, Bangladesh, and over 50 other countries across Asia, Africa, and South America.
Diet
Requires acidic, well-drained soils rich in organic matter with pH 4.5-5.5. Needs consistent moisture without waterlogging. Prefers partial shade to full sun depending on elevation and climate, with diffused light often optimal in lower elevations. Benefits from applications of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers in plantation settings.
Behavior
Tea plants exhibit continuous growth in tropical climates with periodic flushes of new growth. In temperate regions, growth slows or stops during winter dormancy. Plants can be maintained as low bushes through regular pruning or allowed to grow into trees. They develop extensive root systems and can live for over 100 years if unpruned. New shoots (flushes) emerge every 7-14 days during active growing seasons, making frequent harvesting possible.
Reproduction & life cycle
Reproduces sexually through seeds and vegetatively through cuttings. White flowers appear after 3-4 years, blooming in autumn and winter in most regions. Flowers are pollinated by insects, primarily bees. Seed capsules mature 12-18 months after flowering, splitting to release 1-3 large oily seeds. In commercial production, plants are propagated mainly through vegetative cuttings to maintain cultivar characteristics. Seeds lose viability quickly and require immediate planting. Plants reach harvestable maturity at 3-5 years.
When to look
Harvesting occurs year-round in tropical regions. Spring (March-May) produces the most prized first flush in many regions. Monsoon or summer harvests continue through June-September. Autumn flush occurs October-November. In temperate areas, harvesting is limited to spring through autumn with winter dormancy.
Cultural significance
Tea has profound cultural, economic, and social importance across the globe. Originating in ancient China, tea ceremonies became central to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures. The plant drove colonial expansion and trade routes, notably the British tea trade from India and Ceylon. Tea houses and ceremonies remain important social institutions. Beyond its beverage use, tea has traditional medicinal applications in Asian medicine for alertness, digestion, and antioxidant properties. Green tea catechins and other polyphenols are studied for potential health benefits. Tea culture influenced art, literature, and philosophy, particularly Zen Buddhism in Japan.
