The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an annual or short-lived perennial plant in the Solanaceae family, originating from the Andean region of South America. Domesticated by indigenous peoples in Mesoamerica, it was introduced to Europe in the 16th century following Spanish colonization and has since become a dietary staple across nearly every continent. The plant produces fruits that are botanically classified as berries but culinarily treated as vegetables. Tomato plants typically grow as sprawling vines or bushes, with determinate varieties reaching defined heights and indeterminate varieties continuing to grow and produce fruit throughout the growing season. The plant's leaves are compound and pinnate, releasing a distinctive aromatic scent when touched due to glandular trichomes. Thousands of cultivars have been developed, ranging from tiny cherry tomatoes to large beefsteak varieties, in colors including red, yellow, orange, green, purple, and striped combinations. How to identify
Tomato plants feature compound leaves with 5-9 leaflets per leaf, covered in fine hairs and releasing a characteristic pungent odor when crushed. Plants range from compact bush types (30-90 cm) to indeterminate vines exceeding 3 meters. Yellow five-petaled flowers appear in clusters, measuring 1-2 cm across. Fruits vary dramatically by cultivar, from 1 cm diameter cherry tomatoes to 10+ cm beefsteak types, with smooth skin and flesh containing numerous small, flat seeds embedded in gel-filled locules. Stems are green to purplish, hairy, and become woody with age.
Habitat
Cultivated in gardens, greenhouses, and agricultural fields worldwide. Requires well-drained, fertile soil with full sun exposure. Originally adapted to the mild climates of Andean slopes and valleys. Grows best in warm temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F) and is frost-sensitive.

Behavior
Indeterminate varieties exhibit continuous vegetative growth and fruit production throughout the growing season, requiring pruning and support. Determinate varieties grow to a fixed size, flower, and fruit over a concentrated period. Plants exhibit phototropism, gravitropism, and thigmotropism. Roots can extend 1-2 meters deep but most feeding roots occupy the top 30 cm of soil. Responds to pruning by producing lateral shoots from leaf axils.
Reproduction & life cycle
Predominantly self-pollinating with perfect flowers containing both male and female organs. Flowers develop in racemes and can be buzz-pollinated by bumblebees or wind vibration, though self-pollination occurs readily. Fruits develop 45-90 days after transplanting depending on variety and conditions. Each fruit contains 100-300 seeds. Seeds require warm soil (21-27°C) for germination, which occurs in 5-10 days. Plants complete their life cycle in 90-180 days for most cultivars.
When to look
Plant after last frost in spring when soil reaches 15°C (60°F). Harvest summer through fall depending on planting date and variety. In frost-free climates, can be grown year-round with best production in cooler months.
Cultural significance
Central to Italian, Mexican, Spanish, and countless other global cuisines. Wild relatives are crucial genetic resources for crop improvement. Historically viewed with suspicion in Europe due to nightshade family association. The Aztecs called it 'xitomatl' (plump thing with a navel). Celebrated in festivals like Spain's La Tomatina.
