How to identify

The most distinctive feature is the spike (seed head), which measures 5-15 cm long and contains 20-100 grains arranged in spikelets along a central rachis. Each spikelet contains 2-5 florets protected by glumes (chaff). The grains are oval-shaped, 5-8 mm long, and range from golden to reddish-brown when mature. The plant develops a fibrous root system that can extend 1-2 meters into the soil.
Habitat
Wheat is cultivated in agricultural fields across temperate and subtropical regions. It grows best in well-drained, fertile loamy soils with pH between 6.0 and 7.5. The crop requires full sun exposure and is adapted to regions with annual rainfall of 375-875 mm, though irrigation supplements natural precipitation in drier areas. Wheat tolerates a range of temperatures but performs optimally with cool temperatures during vegetative growth and warm, dry conditions during grain filling and harvest.
Distribution
Wheat is cultivated on every continent except Antarctica, with major production concentrated in China, India, Russia, the United States, France, Canada, Germany, Ukraine, Pakistan, and Australia. The crop covers approximately 220 million hectares globally, making it one of the most extensively grown crops. While no longer found in truly wild forms, wheat's ancestors originated in the Fertile Crescent region encompassing modern-day Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran.

During grain filling, carbohydrates are translocated from leaves and stems to developing kernels. At maturity, the plant senesces and grains dry to harvestable moisture content of approximately 13-14%.
Reproduction & life cycle
Wheat is primarily self-pollinating, with fertilization occurring before flowers open (cleistogamy). Each floret contains both male (anthers) and female (stigma and ovary) reproductive structures. Flowering progresses from the middle of the spike outward, typically occurring over 3-5 days. Pollen is released and fertilizes the ovary within the same floret, resulting in grain development. Each successfully fertilized floret produces a single grain (caryopsis) containing the embryo and endosperm surrounded by the bran layers. Modern cultivated wheat is hexaploid (6 sets of chromosomes), resulting from ancient hybridization events between wild grass species.
When to look
Plant winter wheat in autumn (September-November in Northern Hemisphere), spring wheat in early spring (March-May). Harvest occurs in summer (June-August for winter wheat, August-September for spring wheat in Northern Hemisphere). Timing varies by hemisphere and local climate.
