The blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) is a large African antelope known for its distinctive appearance and spectacular annual migrations across East African savannas. These gregarious herbivores form vast herds numbering in the hundreds of thousands, making their migration one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth.
Overview
The blue wildebeest, also known as the common wildebeest or brindled gnu, is a robust bovid native to eastern and southern Africa. Despite its name, the species appears dark gray to brownish-gray with darker vertical stripes on the neck and shoulders. Adults stand approximately 1.3 meters at the shoulder and can weigh between 120-270 kilograms, with males being larger and more heavily built than females. Access to surface water is essential, and they typically remain within 15-20 kilometers of drinking water. Distribution
Blue wildebeest are found across eastern and southern Africa, with major populations in Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Significant numbers also exist in the Kalahari region, Kruger National Park, and various other protected areas. Historically the species ranged more widely, but populations have been fragmented by human settlement, agriculture, and veterinary fencing. Diet
Blue wildebeest are specialized grazers with a preference for short grasses. They primarily consume grass species including Themeda, Digitaria, and Panicum varieties. Gestation lasts approximately 8-8.5 months, with most calves born within a highly synchronized 2-3 week period in January-February. This birth synchrony is an anti-predator strategy that saturates predators and increases individual calf survival. Females give birth to a single calf, usually in the early morning on open plains. Calves can stand within minutes and run with the herd within hours, though they remain vulnerable to predation. Weaning occurs at around 8 months.
