Wood Frog

How to identify
Wood Frogs are 3.5-7.5 cm (1.4-3 inches) in length with a characteristic dark brown or black mask extending from the snout through the eye to the tympanum. Body coloration ranges from tan, brown, rust, to nearly black, often with a light dorsal stripe. They have a relatively pointed snout, prominent dorsolateral ridges running down the back, and a white belly. Males are typically smaller than females and develop dark throats during breeding season. The call is a short, raspy, duck-like quacking sound that lasts about one second, often heard in large choruses.
Habitat
Wood Frogs inhabit moist deciduous and mixed forests, coniferous woodlands, bogs, tundra, and meadows. They require proximity to temporary or permanent pools, ponds, and wetlands for breeding. Outside breeding season, adults are terrestrial and found on the forest floor, often far from water. They prefer areas with leaf litter and fallen logs for cover and overwintering sites.
Distribution
Wood Frogs have the widest distribution of any North American amphibian, ranging from the Appalachian Mountains north through Canada to the Arctic Circle in Alaska. Diet

Tadpoles are herbivorous and filter-feed on algae, detritus, and microscopic organic matter in their breeding pools. They may also occasionally consume dead tadpoles or other organic material.
Behavior
Wood Frogs are primarily nocturnal and terrestrial outside of the breeding season. They exhibit explosive breeding behavior, with massive aggregations forming at breeding sites for only a few days following ice-out in spring. Their most remarkable behavior is freeze tolerance: they seek shelter under leaf litter or logs and allow themselves to freeze solid during winter, with ice crystals forming in body cavities while glucose protects cells from damage. They cease breathing and heartbeat during this frozen state, resuming normal function upon thawing.
Reproduction & life cycle
Wood Frogs are among the earliest amphibian breeders in spring, often mating while ice still covers portions of breeding pools. Males arrive first and call to attract females. Breeding occurs in temporary vernal pools, ditches, and shallow pond edges. Females lay 1,000-3,000 eggs in globular masses attached to submerged vegetation. Multiple females often deposit eggs in communal masses. Eggs hatch in 9-30 days depending on temperature. Tadpoles transform into metamorphs in 6-15 weeks, leaving the pools before they dry. Sexual maturity is reached in 1-3 years.
When to look
Best observed during early spring breeding season (March-May depending on latitude), immediately after snowmelt and ice-out. Adults are active from spring through fall but may be encountered on the forest floor during summer. They hibernate underground from late fall through winter.
